this show was around for the final years of my childhood years (my childhood years would have ended around 1998), and it's been on for 25 years. that was a good long run for a cartoon outside of Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, the Mickey Mouse & Friends cartoons from Disney, and other franchises with longevity. guess PBS realized it was getting way to expensive to keep this show on in new episode form. show will most likely live on in repeats and possibly streaming.
 
I am actually just a bit sad about this. Because I remember when it first came out, on a lot of PBS member stations, it was actually the show that replaced the afternoon airing of Sesame Street, which had likely been on since that show first began in 1969. I wasn't watching Sesame Street at the time, but I was actually quite surprised to see that it wasn't on in the afternoon anymore, because I always thought that was a permanent fixture.
 
Arthur was another staple of my childhood, but 25 years is a long run. Way longer than I thought it would last. And the premise remained the same for the primary school audience that it targeted. Arthur, Francine, D.W., and the rest of the cast talked about things that other PBS shows did not cover. They even honored Hanukkah and Kwanzaa on their holiday shows, showing children that people don't always celebrate Christmas in December.
