July PPM's

Quite a bit of movement.
  • WDAS jumped 0.8 and is dominating at 8.6--almost 2 full shares ahead of the number 2 station (which happens to be WMMR).
  • B101.1 also jumped 0.8. They're up to 5.6 (highest since February) and tied with WMGK which dropped 0.7.
  • WXTU also dropped 0.7, landing at 4.7.
  • BEN-FM regained all of last month's loss, rebounding to 4.3.
  • Oddly, Q102 crashed 1.8 and ended up with a 2.8, lowest I can remember seeing them. The listeners did not apparently decide to try WTDY as they lost 0.1 and now sit at 1.4.
  • WXPN dropped a full point to 2.1.
  • WPEN went from 2.8 to 1.4. WIP, by the way, jumped by 0.6 to 5.8, good for third place. Go figure.

Yeah. A weird book of drops.

XTU down .7
IOQ down a startling 1.8.
XPN dropping a point (leveling back off after a hot book?)
PEN dropping 1.4. (No flyers or sixers aren't helping).

And I know I know "It fits a piece in the cluster!" but still any flashing warning lights with WTDY or WRNB? I figure they'll give the new piped in talent some time for WTDY. WRNB has nowhere to go but up, and they can't do it. They're getting beat out by a Spanish AM/FM Translator combo whose signal you can't hear in half of the city.

Good books for WBEB, of course WDAS, WBEN, and WRFF with a nice uptick

Seems like both are between a rock and a hard place.

What would Urban One even do with WRNB? They seem to have expertise in few if any other genres. I think they have a couple Telemundo-formatted stations out there and perhaps a Talk station? I can't see either working in Philadelphia. I kinda feel like their only option is to sell the thing but even for $100, I wouldn't want to own it!

Audacy has a ton more format options but when you look at the current radio situation in Philadelphia in general (and Audacy's situation here in particular), it's hard to come up with something worth trying that would make more sense and be less risky than just letting WTDY be a cheap also-ran.

Maybe Radio One should start thinking about Moving Classix to 100.3? Since they're doing well 🤔

What is a "Telemundo formatted station"?

6+numbers don't matter.

Surprised at the downward tick for WXTU, weren't country stations heating up in recent years? Particularly in summer months

What is a "Telemundo formatted station"?
I don't actually know. I just remember seeing something on their website under the Radio One section, there were some stations that were called Telemundo. I didn't click on them to see what they actually were though.

They don't not matter. They are obviously indicative of something. Also, that's what we have access to here so that's what we discuss. Thanks for your helpful input though.
No, they don't matter at all, certainly not to determine success or failure. The only purpose they serve is as a score for radio nerds to justify their personal ajenda. In reality, unless you have the cume and TSL for the demographic the station(s) are targeting, it's just random numbers.

"Personal agenda?" Dear lord. Saying (again) that they don't matter at all but immediately qualifying the statement is... Well, just... You know what, never mind.

If you don't think the ratings matter, then you don't need to comment on the thread. Pretty simple.

I'd go even further and say that if someone really believes the ratings don't matter, they wouldn't even bother reading the thread. Every month the numbers get posted and lots of people click on the thread and then discuss said numbers. That in and of itself means that they matter. A lot of people just really like hearing their own voice/seeing their own words.

Interesting how you reply like a third party. Kind of a cowardly way to debate someone..
I never said ratings don't matter. I said 6+ ratings don't matter, because it's just a fact.
If your station targets an audience consisting of 18-34YO females, then it's very possible to be number one in the demographic that matters, yet show poorly in 6+.
I could go on, if you'd like to learn more about how the business actually works, when it comes to ratings, either David, BigA, or me would be happy to oblige.
