Rumor: KBRU flipping to sports

Rumor going around OKC is that KBRU will flip to sports, possibly as soon as tomorrow morning. The change may also involve KREF 1400. iHeart has requested calls KREF-FM for the station and reserved a domain for 94.7 The Ref.

Is there any other market in the U.S. where there are THREE FM sports stations? All full power outlets?

107.7 KRXO - affiliated with SportsMap

98.1 WWLS - affiliated with ESPN (Always funny to see an FM station in OKC with a W call sign.)

94.7 KBRU - affiliated with Fox Sports

This also means that there is only one Rock station in the market now, KATT, which is a Mainstream Rock outlet. No Classic Rock, no Alternative Rock, no Adult Album Alternative (AAA), although KQOB, as an adult hits station, plays a lot of MTV era rock music.

But still, three Sports stations on FM, five on AM (640, 930, 1340, 1400 and 1560). But only one Rock station?

Advertisers love sports, rock -- especially AAA and alternative -- not so much. Classic rock is healthy elsewhere, maybe demographics in OKC work against it there, although I have no idea why.

OKC has "92.9 the Edge" for alternative, KOMA-HD2 / K225BN. A full power analog signal for alternative would be nice, though.

I don't think so, and Denver used to have three (one translator). The translator flipped but two full-power stations remain. OKC on the other hand has no local MLB or NFL team, yet there are four sports FM stations. Sheesh...
There is a 250 watt translator of classic rock on 104.5 with KRXO's old format.

Oklahoma may only have one major professional sports team, but it’s wrapped up in its sports. Sooner football is almost a religion there, and the people who didn’t go there are often even bigger fans than the alumni. High school sports are also big in Oklahoma, but not nearly as big as it is in West Texas.

But how much local content is there on those four Oklahoma City sports stations? I'd imagine all four carry some national programming. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if two or three have no local programming at all, existing just to "clear" network shows in OKC so the network can tell advertisers that people there are listening.

Is kfaq flipping to sports or not?

The three Class C FM sports stations in OKC are live and local during daytime hours. I believe KINB 105.3 is all CBS Sports all-the-time, but the other FM sports stations only air network programming after-hours. From what I understand, KREF-FM splits off from 1400/99.3 after-hours and essentially becomes a KGHM simulcast. Seems like I heard KREF 1400/99.3 replays its daytime lineup after its final local show of the day, but I haven't listened to it outside of working hours in probably 15 years.
