Star 101.5's Kent Phillips battling cancer

Nice to know other stations are acknowledging this and sending their best wishes. KXXO 96.1 Olympia mentioned this on their morning show.

Best wishes to Kent Phillips, a face I grew up with on Northwest Afternoon and a voice well-known to the Star airwaves. Fight like hell Kent!

Cancer is just the bleeping worst. But I'm glad it was caught early. More power to ya, Kent...

When it comes to Seattle broadcasting legends, Kent Phillips definitely one of the first names to come to mind in that conversation. It’s great to see how many people (from other broadcasters, co-workers, and longtime fans) have cone out to support him through this difficult time. Fight like hell!

I think Kent was and still is involved with radio stations in Chelan County in central WA. His career moved into ownership if not mistaken.

KOZI/KOHO? They just put in a new announcer and ID sweeps, but every once in a while you will *still* hear long-time KING-TV announcer Joe Michaels doing a TOH ID or a news sponsor sweeper.

KOZI/KOHO owned by Harriett Bullit -- but sold recently.

His main investment there is SUNNY (classic hits) which now blankets Eastern WA. Originally a small station in Twisp, he moved it to Wenatchee and picked up additional stick from V. Wheeler to extend the coverage. I believe it reaches Spokane....

Ah, the 98.5 in Grand Coulee! Had no idea he was involved with that project.

KOHO is still owned by Harriet Bullitt. She did recently sell the rest (KOZI A/F and KZAL) to a local group. Talked with her years ago and she was just waiting for the right local folks with enough resources to take it over.

Is that anything like renting with the option to buy? Sort of like with real estate leases?
Yes and no. Resort Radio purchased all the airtime for a four year period. At the end of the deal, they have the first right to purchase the station at a pre-negotiated price.

In the biz they call it an LMA. Trial marriage, rent to own, lease/option, etc. Not uncommon. Used to be you make a deal to acquire, and can't talk to the employees until the transaction is complete. One of the longer LMAs recently was the Fisher/Sinclair LMA on KOMO-FM.

Great news! Keep fighting Kent Phillips, Seattle loves you! (y)
