91.7 changed callsigns from KXNG to KHVU on 8/20

The toh mentions KHVU but as of last night the RDS still showed KXNG and HD showed KXNG-FM. I wonder why they changed it, it's still the same station.

Maybe they are changing formats?
Who knows. I assume it would still be a Christian format. But what would they change it to that would be unique to Houston? A Christian rap station is already unique IMO.

Anything obvious en espanol?
I've wondered if Hope Media would consider launching a Hispanic targeted format, but I always thought it would be a third service in addition to the established KSBJ and NGEN programming. Given the other Spanish language religious outlets in the market, I rather doubt they would go that route.

Curious if KHCB might look for a better Houston signal for their Spanish language output. The current 1400 and 101.5 are totally inadequate.

But you have to remember that the other Christian radio stations in Spanish usually use them as a business. Paid programming is usually what the stations do in Spanish. Even if they are considered nonprofit. They still charge for airtime for other churches to be able to have programming on certain hours. KS DJ on the other hand I have yet to listen to a preacher on either of those two stations. It is basically only music all day and supported by listeners. The only station I have heard that plays nothing but music in Spanish would be Amor Celestial 104.9 HD2

I don't have any inside information and am only wildly speculating. Full stop. The call sign change might signal a rebrand and not a reformat.

It is worth remembering though that NGEN has already had one format shift since it launched, they just kept the same brand, so the current format doesn't necessarily seem like a sacred cow (probably a poor idiom to describe a Christian station!).

It's not hard for me to imagine that a Christian music station in spanish might be more financially viable and have a much longer runway ahead on terrestrial radio than Christian hiphop. NGEN is the kind of format that seems well suited for an app/smartspeaker station: it's very niche, has little competition, and the target is likely already the heaviest users of smart phones and speakers.

The 91.7 signal would actually be pretty decent at reaching the most heavily hispanic areas of the metro.

This is an aside, but I would love to see what the KSBJ team could do with a noncommerical black gospel format. WPOZ does one in Orlando.

I don’t see them doing spanish Christian I suspect it doesn’t work the same way .. you normally would need a group of churches willing to support the station . Block programming is normally how these stations operate . But if anyone could pull it off it would be ksbj

KSBJ doesn't do block programming. NGEN doesn't either. There may be some small underwriting arrangements with some area churches or businesses but that is not the bread and butter on either. KSBJ is very successfully because they have a large and loyal audience that directly supports the operation.

KKHT (100.7) is a block programming operation with many national ministry programs as well as local churches. The format and the business model are very different.

That is what he is saying, having a Spanish language format would not work for them. Because churches would not donate money if they are not allowed to have small blocks.

So they won't give money unless they get some self promotion? Christian Protestant broadcasters are a bigger scam than turn signal fluid. We need to strip religion institutions from their tax exempt status. Let them pay for their faux Jesus jerk circle.

Not to be racial, but we’re talking about Spanish language churches. Not all churches think the same.
