(Attempted twice to post this yesterday 8/29)
Crystal Lake, IL......
Days: 1020 is pure splatter from WNVR (1030). COL is Vernon Hills, IL, about 20 miles away, but the stick is less than three miles to my west northwest. 10kw, complete with a day pattern that's somewhat favorable to my location. I'll elaborate on WNVR next week.
Nights: WNVR drops to 130 watts (if they bother to stay on at all), and as relates to 1020, splatter, becomes a non issue. So KDKA blasts in all alone with a good signal. Contrary to what's happened with some 50kw skywave signals, KDKA has improved at my location over the past year or so. It's sounding really good. So I wonder if anyone else hasalso observed what I'm hearing. The only times KDKA has had issues here have been on rare occasions when KJJK (Fergus Falls, MN) or KMMQ (Omaha area) "forget" to power down. If that happens with either one, the usual result has been that they're audible underneath.
Retro: Before WNVR launched on 1030, I could sometimes get a very weak signal from WPEO, a 1kw non-directional daytimer from Peoria, IL
Other Location. During my stay on Maui in 1994, KTNQ was easily the strongest nighttime signal from the U.S. mainland. As radioman would say, "peeled paint" on a nightly basis!
