AM Frequency of the Week: 1020

(Attempted twice to post this yesterday 8/29)

Crystal Lake, IL......

Days: 1020 is pure splatter from WNVR (1030). COL is Vernon Hills, IL, about 20 miles away, but the stick is less than three miles to my west northwest. 10kw, complete with a day pattern that's somewhat favorable to my location. I'll elaborate on WNVR next week.

Nights: WNVR drops to 130 watts (if they bother to stay on at all), and as relates to 1020, splatter, becomes a non issue. So KDKA blasts in all alone with a good signal. Contrary to what's happened with some 50kw skywave signals, KDKA has improved at my location over the past year or so. It's sounding really good. So I wonder if anyone else hasalso observed what I'm hearing. The only times KDKA has had issues here have been on rare occasions when KJJK (Fergus Falls, MN) or KMMQ (Omaha area) "forget" to power down. If that happens with either one, the usual result has been that they're audible underneath.

Retro: Before WNVR launched on 1030, I could sometimes get a very weak signal from WPEO, a 1kw non-directional daytimer from Peoria, IL

Other Location. During my stay on Maui in 1994, KTNQ was easily the strongest nighttime signal from the U.S. mainland. As radioman would say, "peeled paint" on a nightly basis!

Daytime in Cheyenne, WY: Nothing
Nightime: Cross between KMMQ Omaha, Ne and KCKN Roswell, NM each about 400 miles away from me.

I would love to grab KDKA, (same with WTAM), but it is just outside my range of reception. I might try to head east in September and see what I can find.
what's happened with some 50kw skywave signals
I have to agree with this temperament, they just don't focus on the skywave signal anymore, and we're reaching the top of a new solar cycle, it sounds like! So, it might get worse before it gets better.

In the near north Chicago suburbs: Daytime WNVR splatter. I used to hear a weak WPEO, but that's much tougher now with WNVR beaming in my direction. At night all KDKA with a very good signal.

Other location: Out west it's either KTNQ or KCKN. When I was in Hawaii 11 years ago KTNQ was like a local at night. I've tried to
hear it in the past in the midwest when KDKA is off, but I've never caught it.

From south Overland Park, Kansas:

Day: Nothing but splatter from 5 kW KCWJ on 1030 kHz in Blue Springs, Missouri. They are directional, aimed southwest right at my location. KMMQ on 1020 kHz in Plattsmouth, Nebraska is 50 kW during the day but highly directional, aimed straight west. I am not in their daytime coverage area.

Critical Hours: I have heard KMMQ on rare occasion. Also, a one time log of daytimer WPEO when they first sign on. KDKA is more common during critical hours.

Night: KDKA usually dominates and is surprisingly strong at times when you consider the distance from my area. I have heard some Spanish language programming I have yet to ID.

Retro: WPEO was the first and only Top 40 station in Peoria until 1960. They were dominant during day. The morning drive personality was the late Harry Harrison who was known on-air as the "Mayor of Peoria" during his time in the market.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: usually nothing, but WPEO (Peoria, IL) is being heard on occasions
Nightime: KDKA rules the frequency, but sometimes KMMQ (Plattsmouth, NE) or KJJK (Fergus Falls) can be heard.

DX/RETRO: others heard on this frequency include KCKN (Roswell, NM) during a DX test running 10kW non-directional. KCKN also heard few times with their regular Spanish language religious programming. Also heard WJEP (Ochlocknee, GA) in the past. Earlier this year Radio Artemisa from Cuba was heard several times.

Back in 1990's Caribbean Christian Radio from Turks & Caicos used to be a regular log in the Chicago area on this frequency. Couple stations that are no longer on the air were also logged in Chicago: Radio Mundial, Venezuela and Radio Reloj, Cuba.

The discussion elsewhere about the wobbler on 870 brings to mind a mystery from 2006 on 1020 kHz. At that time there used to be a steady tone audible under KDKA for a long time. I don't think it was ever resolved who the culprit generating the tone was.

East Tennessee: There's nothing on 1020 in this region, so nothing daytime, Night is all KDKA.

Retro/other: Both in Lafayette, IN and Quincy IL, there was a weak WPEO, Peoria.
I remember in Lafayette getting an English language religious station on 1020 from the Caribbean but I don't remember what it was.

In west Houston, daytime nada. At sunset, KOKP in Oklahoma is often on top despite their low power, but it's generally a mush of signals. At night it's KCKN dominating with KOKP coming up every now and then. Sometimes there is another Spanish station in there, but have never heard enough to ID - maybe Cuba or XEPR Poza Rica, Veracruz MX.

I've never heard KDKA here. Back in the early 70's in Tulsa it was a regular.

Chicago by the lakeshore:

Daytime: Occasionally get a whiff of WPEO Peoria.

Critical Hours: KDKA is one of the first to arrive in the evening and the last to leave in the morning. Sometimes also WPEO comes in decently before they go off for the night.

Night: KDKA quite consistently.

Retro: Bay Area, 1980s: KTNQ in Los Angeles could be heard quite well.

Has anyone from the Chicago area ever heard WCIL Carbondale, IL? Have been trying all these years, but no luck yet.

I've also tried for it, but without any success. A couple of "unknowns", but nothing I could ID.

South Mississippi:

Day- nothing
Night: Radio Artemisa in Cuba, and KDKA is a bit weaker.
Apologies for the veer, but hope you're safe from hurricane Ida at your location. I've been following coverage via the WWL-TV stream. The radar images seem to indicate that the area east and northeast of the storm center....while away from the center....is still getting massive amounts of rain.

There was a lot of wind and rain last night, today has been much drier. The power was off for most of last night and this morning. Unfortunately, it was much worse to the south as most of the New Orleans area will not have electricity for some time.

As CADXER mentions above, my English language religious station was Caribbean Christian Radio

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago:

Day: WPEO Peoria, Ill., has been there in the past at a listenable level. Today, it's audible but not intelligible by using a loop and the narrow mode on the Sony ICF-2010. Definitely not WMVP slopover.

Night: KDKA Pittsburgh, of course, nightly. On one occasion, way back, HJDQ "Emorisa Claridad" Medellin, Colombia, with 10 kW during a KDKA silent period. And on 10/6/2020, KCKN Roswell, N.Mex., over KDKA by maneuvering the loop.

Nice going on KCKN. I've never snagged that one. Probably spending too much time trying for KGBS/KTNQ.

If anyone needs KCKN, they are fighting it out with KDKA on 1020 with Spanish religious music right now.
