Coyotes to Bonneville

Seems like they weren't on KGME for very long. How are all games guaranteed to be on KMVP and KTAR? Don't they have the lowest priority after all the other teams?

That's exactly what I was thinking. I looked it up, and it was two years. Here's the 2019 story:

This is a return to Bonneville for the Yotes. The reason they left was because of all the pre-emptions. They wanted all their games on one station, rather than getting bumped all the time.

That was the problem before. Not all Coyotes games aired, and some were joined in progress. TMISU has its priorities, which are the Cardinals, Suns, Diamondbacks, ASU, and then the Coyotes.

I have to guess that the issue, if one doesn't have an HD radio, is that 620 is audible almost valley-wide at night, while 910, to put it mildly, isn't. It might help to include 92.3 in their sports coverage all the time, and not just when there was a Cards/Suns/ASU hoops conflict.

Another aspect for iHeart was the streaming package, with supposedly lots of online content.

Perhaps we're seeing that streaming isn't as valuable as broadcast? Perhaps the placement on iHeartRadio didn't make up for being on a weak AM.

Maybe people don't realize that all NHL games are streamed free via the flagship station. That's been true since at least the 2009-10 season.

I get that, but the iHeart platform is among the most popular, plus the station was supposed to create a lot of online highlights, basically doing all of the audio production work for the team. They offered the same deal for the Oakland As with a similar AM station in market #4.

I see Bonneville is on TuneIn, maybe also Audacy.

Aren't the Coyotes actively looking for a new city? Can they get out of Arizona after the coming season or are they prohibited from leaving by contract?

They're talking to the City of Tempe about building an arena there. Building on the west side was always a mistake, but the owner at the time didn't have a choice after being shot down by Snobsdale. He owned that land.

There are plenty of places in the East Valley that could support the NHL, since that is where 90% of the fan base is. Unfortunately, outside of Tempe and Scottsdale, there isn't much more money here (I live in Mesa) than there is on the west side. I don't think it would be possible to build another arena in downtown Phoenix. Too costly.

This is like the NHL getting ESPN as a broadcast partner again. Having the #1 sports radio station in Arizona behind you > their own devoted streaming channel.

The other question is, will the Car Salesmen (big Coyotes supporters) follow the team to 620, leaving 910 with ... um ... just a local morning show?

Or would they give up the Fox Sports Radio affiliation to 1060 (which already carries FSR shows as a part-time affiliate) and become "iHeart Podcasts 910?" What's the use for them now when all they will carry PBP-wise is lowly U of A football?

Unless I've got my memory scrambled I seem to remember that one of the original hockey arena sites was near where Tempe Marketplace is today but the city of Tempe shot that down because they wanted a major tax revenue base instead. Then there was the ASU fiasco with the arena to be used by both the college and Coyotes but ASU backed out for some reason I don't recall now.

Mismanagement of the team itself (trading off the original high quality players and bringing in the "no show" coach (Gretzky) didn't help. Similar to the Dbacks after they won the World Series.

Personally, I think one area that so far has been overlooked is the Maricopa town area. With the new freeways it would still be a drive but is easily reached from most parts of the Valley except perhaps the far north central and west.

Whatever the decision I hope they can get it done quickly because I'm very curious where the Yotes will play year after next. Back to the Madhouse on McDowell for a season or two?

And it sure would help if the local media, especially TV, would cover the Coyotes at least as poorly as they do the other local teams.

As some of the others point out, I don't think they've actively looking for a new city yet, or at least a new city outside of the Valley. That could, however, happen at some point if they can't get a favorable enough deal with Phoenix or a nearby city. Kansas City has the T-Mobile Center, and Patrick Mahomes is reportedly willing to invest in an NBA and NHL team if they would locate there. Quebec City would like to bring the Nordiques back, too.

Most of these long-term broadcast deals have outs in case the team moves to another city, but I seem to remember, in the mid-90's, WTAM 1100 had to carry the Baltimore Ravens for a year or two.

The NHL just added an expansion team in Seattle. Guess which company owns the sports radio station in Seattle?

Bonneville. Had the Coyotes moved to Seattle instead of staying in Phoenix, they would still be on a Bonneville station.

Perhaps the team should look at moving to Salt Lake City.

The Coyotes aren't going to be leaving Phoenix. They'll likely play at the Suns arena until the one in Tempe gets built....assuming they can't get a short term lease with Glendale.

Glendale has zero interest in retaining the Coyotes after this season, and IIRC, the ice-making equipment was removed from the Suns arena when it was remodeled. Now Sky Harbor Airport is complaining about the proposed site just like they did when they shot down the Cardinals stadium 20 years ago.

Was being in the way of Sky Harbor the reason why Phoenix Rising FC, which has been trying to find the support to jump to the MLS (which would mean a much larger stadium), abandon their site near Tempe Town Lake?

The piping underneath the floor is the only significant expense that would prohibit making ice for the hockey team. The actual ice making machines are virtually portable. The floor layout would need changes to accommodate the larger ice surface of course.

Why is Sky Harbor complaining about the Tempe location? Lights? An ice rink is enclosed, not open like the other arenas. Aircraft are already dealing with lights from Tempe Marketplace and all the fancy new (and reflective) buildings surrounding Tempe Town Lake.

That site isn't in the flight path of Sky Harbor. Phoenix Rising needed a better venue for their increasingly popular team. Wild Horse Pass is an improvement and big step forward for soccer in the Valley.
