WFMT has been broadcasting classical music since 1952.

WFMT is one of the last commercial classical stations in the country. There's also WRR in Dallas.

At one time just about every major market had a commercial classical. Some, such as NYC, had two.

It was it's own unique industry, supported by several magazines that promoted the concept of the audiophile.

WOJO has been full time Spanish language since 1972 but I don't know if they've had the same format over the years.

WGCI has been contemporary urban since 1975. WXRT has been 100% rock since 1976.

WVAZ has been geared towards the African American audience since 1974, but changed calls and formats in 1988.

So after WFMT, it would be either WOJO or WGCI as the longest running format in Chicago on FM, then WXRT and probably WUSN and then WBBM FM after that.

WOJO has been full time Spanish language since 1972 but I don't know if they've had the same format over the years.

Originally it was a variety format, playing mostly Spanish language pop and ballads with little regional music. This was often, back then, called the "international format".

When Tichenor took it over in 1986, it became slightly more Mexican focused although still a blend. Back in the 70's and into the 80's, a large percentage of Chicago Hispanics were Puerto Rican; that changed later in the 80's and now the market is predominantly Mexican or of Mexican heritage.

By the later 90's, the format had become pure regional Mexican as it is now.

So since it started, it has had three identifiable formats.

So after WFMT, it would be either WOJO or WGCI as the longest running format in Chicago on FM, then WXRT and probably WUSN and then WBBM FM after that.

But WOJO, while always in Spanish, has had several different formats over the years.

WXRT might be the one of the few radio stations that you will hear a coldplay song and a Led Zeppelin song
