650 KGAB off air Sep 28th, 2021

The 8.5kw flamethrower, KGAB is completely off the air, adding to Cheyenne's recent radio woes. On the bright side, this is giving me a nice opportunity to dx 640, 650, and 660.
So far...
KFI is stronger than usual,
WSM is weak, but occasionally listenable
KTNN is strong-ish, with something underneath.

I'll check later on tonight, as I hope to snag CKOM on 650, and that Canadian on 660.

Yesterday, 1480 KRAE had a programming error which allowed me to hear other stations under a distinct buzz.

106.3 KLEN has been at low-power for months now, with no signs of fixing.

KLEN had been but theyre not anymore.

I heard them in Laramie no problem, barely 5 miles from the 1KW KLMI-FM1 booster

KLMI has been on my bucket list, but no luck yet. It's neat that you heard them in Laramie, probably tropo or something, however it's still low for me. KWBL comes in stronger than KLEN right now, with a 23 compared to an 18. Does anyone remember when they tried to broadcast 3kw from Downtown Cheyenne? What was that like?
 
Update: KGAB is back on the air, I don't have any new chances, and KRAE is fine as well

You probably wont hear KLMI, hardly at all if ever. The main 50KW is terrain shielded from Laramie and the on channel booster is directional towards Laramie, in part to protect 106.3 Cheyenne. You cant hear KLMI in a car till youre more then halfway there from Cheyenne.
 
Update: KGAB is now stuck on night-power (500 watts) well into daytime, producing a weakened, but still very local strength signal to Cheyenne.
 
The fact you guys can get WSM up their in Wyoming is awesome.

Over here, on the west coast ( San Fransisco bay area ), I get either a very weak KSTE or a very weak KMTI.

No sign of WSM unfortunately.

I've actually been trying to snag KMTI (a country station, right?), but no luck so far. It's unfortunate you can't pick up WSM, but hopefully as we go into winter that will become a possibility! I have picked up WSM in Riverton, WY, competing with KGAB for dominance of the frequency.

When I was in Laramie, 40 miles west of Cheyenne, I had WSM fairly well, with KGAB on the air (and its 850 watt 3 tower night pattern pointed right at me)

Those are some nice catches! I know this is a bit off topic, but is anyone (or anything) using the 1.7 to 2Mhz band in 2021? I wonder if that's where they should've put all the TIS stations (perhaps 1710 to 1750 khz) in the 1990's when they expanded the AM band, as to not crowd up our current space.

1700 - 1800 KHz is still used by aeronautical and other beacons, plus various floating markers. It is also assigned for point-to-point voice in Alaska. 1800 - 2000 KHz is the fairly heavily used 160 meter ham band.

Yes, KMTI is country. When I first DX'ed 650, I thought I was listening to WSM. Then, I pull up KMTi online feed, and was so disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I like country music dearly, but I was after the major catch. Pulling up stations online, like WSM is like going to the groceries store to pick up your salmon dinner. Catching it on the radio, live, from over a two thousand miles away is like fishing in the ocean. That feeling you get when you catch it, the thrill of the hunt, is like no other.
I'm actually surprised I even get KMTI, considering its only 900 watts. Right now, its just those two stations that I hear...KSTE and KMTI.

Update 13 October 2021: KLEN is on at full power and RDS now, and K258DN is on for their second attempt. In my location (close to Ranchettes) KQMT still can easily over-ride K258DN if you orient the antenna south-west. Surely that translator would be better of on 100.3 or 96.3, and broadcasting from a more, central, location, (the story goes that K281DD was once on 92.7, and broadcast from a tower in North Cheyenne, which looks like a good place to me)

Was off again temporarily yesterday, but their translator was running just fine, and after about 6 hours, KGAB is back on. Sadly, no glimpse of WSM this time around.
