Upstate changes coming?

Just bumping up, this was the original post about 104.9 Fox Sports.

Between The Roar, ESPN Upstate, and this, a market that isn’t really a big sports talk market is certainly oversaturated IMO. Maybe 104.9 will succeed having the best signal out of the group.
Unless they get some local talent, I can't imagine them doing well. I mean, a local sports station MUST focus on Clemson and USC. I doubt Fox Sports, being nationally syndicated, can do that.

Sports is a heavy lift even in larger markets if there isn’t aren’t prominent professional teams in the area as well. Atlanta is a bit too far, there are some Panthers fans, but it’s a big college area and it’s going to be difficult to pander to the audience where the audience is pretty much Clemson/USC only.

107.5 The Game in Columbia does well enough because they have USC and that’s their focus supplemented with national programming.

105.5 The Roar in Clemson probably does decently because they focus on the Tigers and are extremely locally oriented.

What ESPN 97.1/97.7 and Fox 104.9 are trying to do makes sense from a glance, but the Audience isn’t there for national sports talk. That’s why in markets like this you normally see such programming relegated to AM signals and the like. 104.9’s struggle has been outside of urban which seems to be a route they don’t want to take every viable format is covered and being played elsewhere, much like 102.5.

I'm getting a better signal on 104.9 in East Spartanburg than the 98.3 translator, which is 10 seconds ahead of the 104.9 "simulcast" ...I would love to see something else for the redundant 98.3 Fox Sports waste of a frequency....Fox Sports owns 98.3, but Iheart owns 104.9 so maybe we'll see a big change on 98.3 eventually, especially if they start promoting 104.9...I would love to see X98.5 take over 98.3, it would complement nicely...X98.5 is kinda audible in most of Spartanburg but there's extreme bleed over from 98.3 near downtown....There's way too many sports talk options in our area now, almost to the point where they're competing with themselves, so hopefully soon, we'll see.

i disagree a little with needing a local host on a sports talk to make it successful. listeners want good content. their interests in sports go beyond clemson and south carolina athletics. better content is better content. espn and fox sports are more likely to be able to provide that in my opinion.

Normally, I'd say yes and agree with you, but have you ever been to this town/area? Jeez. The amount of cars with Clemson stickers, flags and cat tails coming out of their trunks is insane. Not as much for the gamecocks, but it's still very present.

The lack of such content on 104.9 will likely make people switch more to the local guys on ESPN Upstate or The Roar.

For certain, monetarily speaking, local ALWAYS wins. However, enticing and compelling content wins ratings...National or local.

It's funny how 105.5 talks up their "big"signal. Maybe they don't realize how crappy it is over much of Greenville, the center of the market. And, when the afternoon dude gets a text about ESPN Upstate, he acts like he's not familiar with them. Funny, I have tape of him spending an hour on air ranting about Mark Sturgis and me, like five years ago. Egomaniacs are entertaining. ;)

There have always been major attitude problems at WCCP which make it pretty unlistenable.

Nothing like promoting your competition. 😂
