Nielsen Ratings 10-4-2021

95.5 WSB keeps going up.
WFOM is going up.
I am surprised the Franken-FM is showing as much as it is. Also, why is it listed as WTBS-FM?

`Or that CBS/Entercom/Audacy would have a horse race between V and 92.9? Anyone ever seen a 6+ that low for V?

And it's finally happened - Power 96.1 has pulled ahead of Q99.7! Listening to both, I feel it's deserved.

V103 has absolutely collapsed to just 1.5 shares ahead of Star. Wow.

Bad books for both Bull and Kicks

Not sure why the Franken-FM is listed as WTBS-FM, since it's technically a TV station. When is the FCC going to get rid of analog LPTV and kill off the Franken-FMs?

V-103 looks the worst it's been in forever. How are they doing in-demo?

Is the problem with Bull and Kicks a product problem? Is country the new CHR with periodic doldrums?

How is Star REALLY doing?

Did iHeart unsubscribe WBIN in Nielsen or quit encoding their program, or did they really not get a single meter the last two books?

Some of the numbers seem kind of fluky. Yes, Country is in a slump, but things haven't changed in the past month. Why would The Bull go from a 3.3 to a 2.6 share, and New Country 101-5 go from a 2.8 to a 2.2? No logical reason. And maybe Power's morning show is catching on, but I'm not seeing a reason why Power would in a month jump from 4.1 to 5.1 while Q99-7 went from 4.9 to 4.1? I like to look at trends. One month is too iffy.

Urban Contemporary stations around the country used to dominate, but in recent times, they've become also rans in many markets while UAC has soared to the top. Yet it's still hard to believe that V-103 has been trending down like this. I don't know how much this has to do with Frank Ski moving to Kiss, perhaps some of it.

At this point, it looks like Star 94's ceiling with Rhythmic AC is just under 3. They did break a 3 share in one month. That's one of the market's superior signals, and I wonder whether the format's potential is commensurate to what that signal is worth. Rhythmic AC hasn't gotten big numbers in other markets, and stations with the format have morphed into something else, usually CHR, which won't happen here.

Any idea why the WALR stream jumped so high? That is the highest I have ever seen a stream rating in the Atlanta market. Ad that to their regular over-the-air ratings and they are doing well.

Nielsen has no way of indicating "TV" in the database for radio. They recognized things like AM, FM and HD and Stream, but the apparently decided not to confuse the issue with a "TV" suffix in the radio survey as they are moving towards multi-platform audience reports. The FrankenFM is used just as an audio service in this case, and it transmits an FM audio signal, so that was their choice.

When I moved to Atlanta in 1994, V-103's shares were in double digits. They always programmed to a very broad audience and got away with it. When Hip Hop became a format in the mid 90's and Hot came on the air, V-103 programmed it at night, a departure from most heritage Urban stations. As Hip Hop became more mainstream, all Urban stations incorporated it into their regular playlists, but V-103 started getting attacked on all sides from stations specializing in specific demos within the broad audience to which V was programming. Still, V stayed strong considering the enormous amount of competition.

These days, I wonder if V is too broad. It's still one of the rare Audacy stations that have live jocks around the clock. I wonder how long that will be the case if ratings don't approve. And Audacy ownership has to some extent sanitized the station. Remember the Free Money Kitty that was around for years? These days V has a national contest to win $1,000. And then there's the loss of Frank Ski because Audacy asked everyone to take a pay cut.

Honestly, more people I know are listening to STREETZ 94.5’s morning show when it comes to the hip hop crowd.

I honestly think Star 94 should go Soft AC or pure AC. They really could do themselves a favor and compete to head-on with B98.5, even though I think they are more Hot AC than ever.

What is the future of 105.3/105.7? iHeart could simply just pull the plug and put an All-Christmas station until December 26 and then, launch the Breeze. Obviously, Power 96.1 is here to stay (which is not a bad thing ;).

I seriously doubt that iHeart would do anything to 105.3 or 105.7 this year. WRDG has more than doubled 6+ since June: .8 to 1.7. IMHO that’s not bad considering there are multiple Urban, Urban AC stations in the market. 105.3’s 60 DB* covers the zip codes with tend to have Urban listeners. 105.7 traditionally gets the majority of Hispanic buys. I don’t know if WLKQ can get some of the agency buys being tied with WBZY, but folks with knowledge have stated that “Regional Mexican” is not the agency favorite for “generic” Hispanic buys compared to what 105.7 is playing.

Back when iHeart was Clear Channel, they flipped 94.9 (Peach / Lite) which was playing secular Christmas music to Country (The Bull) a week or two before Christmas. I don’t know if the folks that make that decision are still around but if they are, I will bet a cup of Burger King regular coffee that they will “bah humbug” any Christmas Music flip

You might be on to something. 94.1 could copy the “Breeze” format and call it something else to avoid copywrite payments. Audacy’s Atlanta cluster non-sports stations have really taken a hit 6+. I don’t know if the money demos are bad at V and Star but there might be some new folks trying to find parking spaces at Colney Square.

How are the "Breeze" stations billing in general? I notice that iHeart's format is still stuck on HD2 in many markets rather than being on a signal most listeners are aware of and can easily receive. Could soft AC still be too strong in 55+ to be an attractive advertising buy?

There's a few Audacy AC stations that use the "Magic" moniker (WSPA/Greenville comes to mind). "Atlanta's NEW Magic 94.1" has a nice ring to it. Of course as an AC station, "Star94" works just as well I guess. Lol

There's Magic here in New Orleans and they are an overall good-sounding AC station. Star 94.1 is just as good - they just need to go AC lol. If V103 continues to slip and crash, maybe Audacy will try something new...but that is not going to happen.
