Alt 105.3 Flips to Adult Hits "105.3 Dave FM"

I like this move a lot!

Alt / Live should've been put out of its misery years ago.

Audacy generally does a good job programming its Adult Hits brands.

I wonder why they named it Dave, though? Why not Frank or Fran in recognition of San FRANcisco?

Alice 97.3 can always spin the singles from the alternative genre that are compatible with its format.

One can only hope KVIL in Dallas will flip next.

It is kinda sad. San Francisco, of all places, can't support an Alternative Rock station. KITS has been doing Modern Rock since October 1986, 35 years in the format.

That said, Audacy does program its large market Adult Hits stations well, largely duplicates of Jack-FM. In addition to KCBS-FM LA, KJKK Dallas and KZJK Minneapolis, which are still paying for the rights to Jack, Audacy has KKHH Houston and WBGB Boston, which sound almost exactly like Jack-FM, down to the sarcastic voice and ironic quips.

Is that's what Dave sounds like too?

Well it's Silicon Valley where tech uptake is high. Maybe it's the perfect example of how tech-savvy people are fleeing to other platforms for new music discovery.*

A bunch of old songs that 40+ grew up with on the radio. Makes sense, that's pretty much what FM is becoming now. That, and godcasters snapping up the most distressed stations in every market.

And probably a jockless presentation for much of the day? I'm not familiar with Audacy's version but that's what Jack was. Cheap to run with no talent. The personality came from the imaging and its recorded jokes.

*EDIT- Almost as if to prove the point, a minute after I wrote this, AllAccess tweeted out the headline, "Adele Breaks Record for Most-Streamed Song In A Single Day". No mention of how often people turned on the radio and waited to hear it.

As sometimes happens with a format flip, Alt 105.3 was in the midst of a contest to give away tickets to the
Red Hot Chili Peppers 7/9/2022 concert at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara:

KOME was by far the better station in the 90s, in my opinion. Too bad CBS (or was it Infinity?) decided to keep Live 105 and sell 98.5 KOME.
Transition period between the two given that CBS merged with Westinghouse Broadcasting and Infinity around this timeframe.

And the station does not even have a 60 dbu signal in San Jose!

Of course the good and well programmed Christian music stations often get in the 3 to 4 share region. Not exactly distressed after the flip!

Of course, we have never had real time measurements for radio so that's not a fair comparison.

Didn't this format fail in SF once before as "MAX-FM"? :)

Yes, 95-7 MAX-FM tried and failed as an Adult Hits station! What station do you see will flip to the Alternative Rock format?

None. That is becoming a very fragmented "format of formats" with distinctive and conflicting subgroups that don't like each other's music.

There was a DAVE FM in Atlanta about 10 years ago. I think CBS owned and it was AAA. It was a decent station. I assume that this SF Dave will not play Dave Matthews Band. Looks like JACK by a different name. Audacy (Entercom) has a stupid new company name and no new ideas. Cheech & Chong said "Dave's Not Here"...

How awful. 🤮 While Live 105 / Alt 105 might not have been the best Alt station, I always enjoyed it. Any station please bring back Alt to the bay area ! ("Dave FM".......a name as lame as it gets!)

When CBS and Infinity merged, it had to spin off some stations, and KOME 98.5 didn’t have as good of a signal. From what I understood, CBS/Infinity tried to keep most of the KOME programming and put it on 105.3.

I always remember KITS as a 1-2 share station. When Entercom swapped it the first time in ‘97, I seem to remember it as a low-rated station. It may have hit or gone briefly above the 2 share range, but I don't remember it ever hitting a 3. Personally, I liked Alt 105.3 when I was in the mood for that kind of music. Problems are that I'm 46, and I only listen to alternative once-in-awhile.
