Alt 105.3 Flips to Adult Hits "105.3 Dave FM"

I like this move a lot!

Alt / Live should've been put out of its misery years ago.

Audacy generally does a good job programming its Adult Hits brands.

I wonder why they named it Dave, though? Why not Frank or Fran in recognition of San FRANcisco?

Alice 97.3 can always spin the singles from the alternative genre that are compatible with its format.

One can only hope KVIL in Dallas will flip next.
[email protected] hasn't been about alternative for many years. It's a middle-of-the-road A/C station now, and would spin the new Adele single 50 times before giving airplay to anything Alternative.

There was a DAVE FM in Atlanta about 10 years ago. I think CBS owned and it was AAA. It was a decent station. I assume that this SF Dave will not play Dave Matthews Band. Looks like JACK by a different name. Audacy (Entercom) has a stupid new company name and no new ideas. Cheech & Chong said "Dave's Not Here"...
Come on, lay off the Audacy hate, will ya? They are bringing innovative programming that will bring iHeartRadio to its knees. Dave FM is a format not done before in Bay Area radio. Where else can you hear Def Leppard next to Rick Astley? Not the Breeze, and probably not KOIT, either. And by playing deep cuts like Jack and Diane, Your Love, I Melt With You, 867-5309, and Pour Some Sugar On Me, they are guaranteed to romp the Breeze and KOIT by double in the ratings! It's music that won't make you asleep at the wheel or on the job!

Very sad indeed that a region as large and diverse as SF-SJ can't support a commercial Alternative station. This may be the first time in over 50 years that there's no "alternative" radio outlet there. The FM free-form style was practically invented there at KMPX in the late 60's, and "alternative" has always existed on one station or another in The Bay since then. The change also says a lot about the changing demographic in San Francisco. The artists and bands are long-gone, replaced by thousands of techies and dot com money.

Loved this station in the 80s, and went to great pains to get it in the Sacramento area including buying a $600 Carver tuner that could filter out the two local stations on 105.1 and 105.5 it was sandwiched in between. By the end of the 90s though synth-pop was done in favor of grunge and little else- and those overplayed 90s songs never left. Just last month I checked them out for the first time in a while and heard mostly 90s junk including Pearl Jam. They used to play promos blasting the other stations for playing "the same old tired songs" from decades ago, but they'd since become exactly that. KROQ in LA became the same, and so did KWOD in Sacramento which never really did the format well to begin with and eventually failed. It would've been nice if someone just came in and gave the format a clean start with a bigger emphasis on NEW music, but otherwise it had to be put out of its misery. The new format could work well if they actually program a huge variety, but it'll likely be the same songs in constant rotation with no new ones added.

It’s showing over 70 dbu over most of San Jose with some shadowing.
I see hundreds of shadow areas inside the theoretically usable city of San Jose areas. In a car, the means fluttering or signal loss. Indoors, of course, only a stream will work. It gets better going up towards the Bay, but is still a very irregular signal the farther south you get.

The signal is no worse there than the majority of other S.F.-based FM stations.

Years ago, I traveled to the Bay Area on a business trip and drove to San Jose. 105.3's signal in San Jose was as good or a bit better than that of 107.7 KSAN.

The fluttering in the car is very minor.

One of the biggest signal loss zones for stations without boosters is along I-580 and along I-680 near Dublin, San Ramon and Pleasanton. You'll see KITS' predicted strength on the L-R map is much weaker in that region than in & around San Jose. Right at that junction, when there were no boosters in use, Live 105's signal went to crap. I also would completely lose the old Rock 92 KSJO. The funny thing is - in downtown Pleasanton - I had zero issue picking up KSJO.

KUFX's signal was also non-existent in that I-580 / I-680 junction area; perhaps that has changed over the years. KEZR was weak and often overcome by Sacramento's KWOD when DX conditions were favorable. (These observations all occurred in the early 00's.)

For those of you awaiting a return of an alternative format on a full power analog FM that blankets the Bay Area - you'll be waiting a very long time, in all likelihood. Heck, I'm still awaiting a successor to Rock 92 KSJO! ;)

Many alternative radio currents are suitable for Hot AC right now, and Alice's roots are in Modern AC. You probably won't hear Nirvana or the Offspring on KLLC, but you'll probably a hear a number of "poppy" currents & recurrents that KITS played, and it wouldn't surprise me if KLLC boosts the number of slots devoted to such songs a bit.

I can’t find a playlist. Is this similar to Audacy’s 103.3 BIG 103 in Boston?
So far these are the songs that I've herd since the their debut yesterday.
  • Blind Mellon - No Rain
  • 99 Luftballons - Nina
  • Pour some sugar on Me - Def Leppard
  • Shot through the Heart - Bon Jovi
  • September - Earth, Wind, & Fire
  • Lovefool - The Cardigans
  • Hey Ya! - Outkast
  • In the Midnight Hour (Rebel) - Billy Idol
  • Hit Me with Your Best Shot - Pat Benetar
  • Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
  • Small Town - Melloncamp
  • Take On Me - Ah Ha
  • The Final Countdown - Europe

Also, here's the first hour of the new format Dave-FM
  • Guns N’ Roses, “Welcome to the Jungle”
  • Pointer Sisters, “I’m So Excited”
  • Billy Idol, “Mony Mony”
  • Hall & Oates, “Rich Girl”
  • Blur, “Song 2”
  • Kiss, “Rock and Roll All Night”
  • Duran Duran, “Rio”
  • MC Hammer, “Can’t Touch This”
  • The Killers, “Mr. Brightside”
  • Journey, “Don’t Stop Believin’”
  • The B-52’s, “Love Shack”

  • Heart, “Magic Man”
  • R.E.M., “It’s The End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine)”
  • Devo, “Whip It”
I'm surprised that they didn't do a commercial free when it comes to the format change from Alternative to Adult Hits.

Right now, add Alternative Rock to the missing format of San Francisco Bay Area next to Country (not counting KRTY since they only cover San Jose area only), AAA, and Active Rock.

It seems that this station is trying to compete against 103.7 80+'s, 94.5 Bay-FM, 98.5 K-FOX, 107.7 The Bone, a little bit of KOIT and The Breeze in terms of demographics.

Besides Adult Hits format sounds closely resemble to Classic Hits format, the only difference is the presentations.

Thank you for mentioning about the Tri-Valley I-580 & I-680 interchange. The bay area radio stations sounds horrible especially I mention about Q102.1 having a horrible signal that it sounds almost none existent around that area in another board.

"Asleep at the wheel": Hey, maybe they'll play Country too!

Same old same old songs we have heard for decades. Not impressed. One remnant does live on from that station at the the live 105 days....The woody show which use to be on live 105. It lives on on la alt 98.7

I know why Woody aka Jeff Tweety along with menace I believe got fired from live 105. They leaked at the time before it was released 26 seconds of know your enemy by Greenday.

I’m glad they play a diverse set of songs like Small Town, Hit Me With Your Best Shot, and Pour Some Sugar On Me. Songs that Bay Area residents admire yet are rarely heard on the radio, especially when KOIT would rather play love songs (Yes, they play The Jets and Air Supply in 2021!) instead of deep rockin’ tunes that most of the USA jams to. Goodness, it’s not like 80s Plus, the Bone, or KFOX would ever play these aforementioned long-lost songs!

"Asleep at the wheel": Hey, maybe they'll play Country too!
Come on, partner! You’ll enjoy hearing Cruise, Before He Cheats, and Fancy Like every hour!

But really though, Audacy really wants that coveted #1 spot in the ratings (and in the demos). Considering that they have well-done stations like WCBS-FM, it’s kind of expected. But an adult hits jukebox differs from a full-fledged classic hits station.
