Quiet book for the most part. Country weakening as it is in most places with the end of summer, urban/hip hop with a little bump, CHR doing nothing special but better than in a lot of markets.

Sports radio a non-player in Hartford with WUCS's dinky signal in a good portion of the market, an uninspiring Yankees team and the sad joke that UConn football has turned into. Remember when WUCS was revealed as the call of the rebranded and relocated WPKX? People on this board if it stood for University of Connecticut Sports. The station never indicated what, if anything, the call stood for, just calling itself 97.9 ESPN. Well, they finally pried the UConn contract away from WTIC, only to see all of its programs but women's basketball (poorly supported among students, most fans are blue-hairs who see the "girls" as surrogate granddaughters) and baseball (not a spectator sport in the chilly Storrs spring) go into the tank. IHeart Hartford isn't getting much back for what it's giving to the big state U. for its sports, is it?
 
Two things regarding WUCS and iHeart - Hartford
- With the very low ratings, and cost of relocating what was WPKX, I can't see how this was a good financial decision, unless capital funding is from corporate account that none of us would know about
- Before the 97.9 transmitter move to downtown Hartford and the change of COL from Enfield to Windsor Locks, iHeart had to spin off 104.1 because of the Hartford market cap. However, 104.1 is licensed to Waterbury, not Hartford. Why was a spin off necessary?

I remember WFAN showing up in the Hartford ratings all the time not all that long ago, before WFAN started making AM an afterthought and promoting the FM frequency. Could WFAN no longer care whether anyone in Hartford is listening and therefore not subscribe to the Hartford book? South of, say, Wallingford, WUCS is no longer a viable option because its laughable signal is castrated in order to protect WSKQ, which starts coming in over WUCS around New Haven.

I have a feeling that sports listening in this market is depressed because Hartford has no major league teams and UConn no longer has a nationally ranked men's basketball program or a competitive football program. The area's sports fans still follow Boston and New York teams, but there's no local outlet to talk about them other than on Rob Dibble's p.m. drive show on WUCS. I've heard the UConn pregame snorefest on WUCS, but the phones are never opened to the fans during those hours and the broadcasters just do their usual shill job for the Huskies.
