KUNK Mendocino Moving -- AGAIN !!

KUNK -- 92.7 A / 101.9 A now moving BACK to the existing AM tower site -- but jumping to 97.5 A. KUNK could have upgraded to a class B-1 -- from Mathison Peak. Now it's back to where it is now. Just a class A -- covering only the coast.

Why bother ? I saw that move to 97.5 - didn't realize it is for the same old site ( Road 409?). I don't think they ever did move on the 101.9 CP, did they? As far as I know, KMFB>KUNK never moved from Rd 409 OR to 101.9. So what would be the point in moving to 97.5, on the same old AM stick, without a power increase?

They must be going to 6kw.

All in all, for as sparse as the population is up there, and considering the terrain seperating the coast towns from the 101 corridor towns, I think you get to serve one or the other. Sure, KZYX can serve both areas, but that's public radio, a different ball game. And 'ZYX&Z needs two stations to do that.
I would guess that the Rd. 409 stick stayed in the possession of KUNK so that's a cash savings as opposed to moving to the north of Fort Bragg site. A doubling of power to 6kw is a nice improvement, giving a 70db signal from north of Fort Bragg to south of Mendocino from the old site. Could the tower height be increased? Well, it is KPMO's 1/4 wave stick, so what to do about that? It would be nice to get that 6kw up to full legal HAAT. How about adding 100' of NON-conductive tower on top for the FM? OK I know I'm taking this a bit far now. Good night.

1.)  KUNK  is still on 92.7 as a 3 KW Class AO.  (AO Old class A).  4 bays - horizontal only.  2.) KUNK pays rent to JPR  who owns the AM tower.  3.)  101.9 was still only a class  A from a new site near Fort Bragg.  4.) 92.7 AO from the existing site already puts a 70 dBu over Fort Bragg.  There is almost no real coverage gain in any of the two new Class A applications.  Very little population or coverage gain. 5.)    KUNK  gave up a class B-1 on either 92.5 or 101.1.  6.) KUNK could have moved  to  an existing  communications site on top of a hill top located - halfway beteen the coastal cities and the Ukiah - Willits area that would have covered ALL of the area.  Not just the coastal area.  7.)  A class  B-1 from the hilltop would give KUNK  a 7 KW ERP -- fully equal to a 25 KW signal.  8.) the new Class A application only increases the ERP to the full 6 KW mark and increases the HAAT  to about 80 M HAAT instead of 51 M HAAT.  Not even giving KUNK  a FULL +100 M HAAT.  9.) the new 6 KW  application requires a new transmitter and antenna system.  KUNK only has a 1 KW transmitter and 4 bay Horizontal antenna now.  10.)  for the very SAME amount of cash -- KUNK could have bought ALL needed equipment -- relocated to the hill top -- doubled the coverage area -- provided new service to the highway 101 inland areas of Ukiah - Willits and Laytonville.  Doubled the VALUE of the station resale.  Been able to cover new sales area and increase the profit of the station and increase the listenership.  Brad needs to put his big boy pants - suit and hat on and do the right things as an owner.

Musicwise this station seems to be all over the place. At first I was under the impression that it was a classic hits station, then I heard some newer music. Perhaps they could be an AC outlet, which I don't think Mendocino has.

Also, is 102.3 KYOE from Pt. Arena still on the air?

Glad to hear that you think the music is good. To bad that there are more fish and seals listening to all the good tunes - than there are people listening. With all the money Brad is making -- he will be able to aford relocating to a real transmitter site soon.

I was a programmer at KZYX when it signed on in 89 until late 93. So I can relate about signal problems in that area. They now have 4 transmitters. One is just a booster in Ukiah of the 90.7 frequency.

Actually, this posting relates 100% to the original thread title. I see last month Rubin filed paperwork to move KUNK from 92.7 to 105.1 . No real in facillity otherwise..

It's funny how the link you provided shows that a construction permit was granted right at the turn of the 20th century. 😜Anyways, it's odd that they moved back, but on a different frequency.

I hijacked this headline again..I noticed Steve Rubin is getting into the TV business. He and his partner paid $55K for two Mako LPTV licenses down in Salinas. K12XN has potentially nice coverage of Salinas, the other marginal. Both would cover Monterey as-is. FCC approved the transfer today. K10RU and K12XN. are the callsigns

The proposed tower site is to the southwest of Salinas for both stations, not a normal location for Salimas-Monterey TV signals. It appears to be near the KLVM (FM) transmitter site.
