Morning Show Ratings

Why is KBIG billing big? I don't think Valentine is comparable in fame to Ryan Seacrest...?

Strange to see only one Spanish station within the Top 10, in a market that is almost majority Latino.

KNX and KPCC (NPR) are within the Top 10. Not too shabby for a Sunbelt market.

I expected 92.3 and Power 106 to demolish 98.7 and KROQ here, given that LA is heavily non-white. But it may not be the case.

Valentine outrates Seacrest. The published numbers we saw here are cume. Agencies buy AQH persons, not cume.

51% of LA metro Hispanics are English dominant. They generally don't listen to Spanish language radio.

In 25-54, in the 3 of the last 4 books KLVE has been #1 in AQH persons. The ethnic stations don't win on cume, they win on TSL.

The top 10 in 25-54 based on average listeners are KRTH, KLVE, KOST, KBIG, KLAX, KIIS, KCBS-FM, KLYY, KTWV, KSCA.

KNX is 20th in 25-45. KPCC is 17th. Of course, KPCC worries about donations, not ad sales.

Every station from KOST to KIIS to KRCD goes after Hispanics. There are only two going after alt rock partisans.

Maybe not nationally, but Valentine is a big deal in LA.

He was at KIIS-FM for a decade, 8 of those years hosting afternoon drive. He then switched over to mornings in 2007. First on KYSR for a very short time, with Lisa Foxx as his co-host. Later on KBIG that same year, where he has been in the same chair for over 14 years.

KBIG's target audience likely listened to Valentine when he was at KIIS and has gotten to enjoy him in the mornings for 14 years on KBIG. That is the definition of a successful, valuable radio personality in a market like Los Angeles, I would say.

Cume says very little. AQH is what matters
True. AQH, which is one way of expressing the average audience size in a particular time period, shows how many people are actually tuned in at a given time or period of time.

AQH Persons, share and rating are all the same. AQH persons is the actual estimate of how many people listen. Share is the percentage of all people actually listening who are tuned to one station. Rating is the percentage of all people, listening or not, who are set on a particular station.

Ratings only measure cume and AQH persons. The rest is derived from that data, mathematically.

Be interesting to see that latest AQH or market share performers. Cume isn't really a barometer of much beyond sampling.
Here is the share for the last 6 books for the LA market's subscribed stations:

Lance has 6 month's worth of data, and also has the most accurate format descriptors. I recommend his ratings summaries very highly. And they are free (and his paid service is well, well worth it).
