Boston Radio Ratings October 2021

https://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb013

WBZ FM #1 and going higher.

Is this because the musical offering are rather lame and repetitive for males ?

WWBX with a very large gain.

WBGB also doing good.

WBWL fading into FNX land

Both WBZ and WRKO remain in the top 10. WRKO has their highest ratings in a while.
Live and local talk radio works. Jeff, Grace and Howie have continued to demonstrate their staying power.

And in the demos that matter and dictate what the rates are WRKO and Crazy Kuhner continue live in the cellar. Just look at who buys spots in morning drive and what they pay for them.

What's FNX land?

No. I think we are seeing pent-up interest in sports after the horrible 2020 experience.

What's FNX land?
WBWL, although I'm not a fan of country music, serves a purpose in protecting WXKS-FM. We could theorize that WKLB would be more neck and neck, perhaps even above Kiss if The Bull didn't exist. Personally, I'd like to see a Modern Rock or a commercial alternative station, but neither is going to happen in the near future.

On a separate note, I think WBOS might benefit from some more talk within the shows. Have Adam 12 do more of what he did with requests or giving him some free form like he did on WBCN and Indie 617. Maybe have music guests on Hardy's show. The problem is that it takes away from WBZ-FM. So, I don't see that happening as well. However, I think not only the playlist but also the personalities are helping WZLX in that battle.

Would WBWL and WZRM both benefit if they swapped frequencies?
WZRM would probably benefit given that 101.7 has a better signal in more Latino-heavy areas.

WBWL, on the other hand, would probably continue to flounder on the new signal. If ratings and billing continue to languish, I'm not sure if the Bull can still substantially serve as a flanker for WXKS-FM, WBZ, and WZLX.

Mindich sold the station to a huge corporation for (fairly) big bucks. Some FNX fans put up a protest. The paper soon went out of business
(after a brief run as a glossy). Ad dollars and
attention was going to the internet

>>Boston Globe 5-27-12
Even now, more than a week removed from its $14.5 million sale to Clear Channel Communications Inc. on May 16, it’s strange to talk about the station in the past tense.

“It’s bleak,” says Julie Kramer, who spent 25 years as one of WFNX’s most popular DJs. “When I heard the news, I was devastated. I was crying not only about the loss of my job, but also about what it means for all these indie and local bands"

Boston Herald 5-16-12:
>>
In his memo to employees, Mindich said that “despite its celebrated history, its cutting-edge programming, its tradition of breaking new music, its ardent fans among listeners and advertisers, for some time it has been difficult to sustain the station — especially since the start of the Great Recession”

“And that is why the station is being sold,” Mindich said in the memo. “It was a great run, and I will miss the station.”

Wow - that is quite the comeback for Mix 104.1!

What the heck is going on there? Better implementation of PPM encoding? Substantive programming improvements? Luck? Nielsen sampling idiosyncracies?

The other big surprise is Rock 101 WGIR-FM out of Manchester, NH racking up a 1.7 share! I think that is an all-time record high AQH share for them in the Boston market.

92.9 suffers from a crap morning show and a crap playlist; not exactly a recipe for success.

They are the only station for people north of the city to get modern rock. It's sister station 100.3 WHEB is formatted the same as WGIR-FM, and lately has better audio quality to it. It isn't on any Boston list because it's out of Portsmouth, NH and the furthest south that it can be picked up is roughly the Merrimack Valley.

I'd imagine the numbers south of 55+ are pretty dire, no matter the daypart. It's an AM with no translator, running conservative talk in a blue state.

Will you are right about numbers >55...the station is (overall) performing better than most expectations.

It would be interesting to see what shows are doing better than others. Personally, the only interesting thing on the station is between Noon and 7PM.

I can't imagine Kuhner is "killin' it" in morning drive, or that The Financial Exchange is their best draw.

But...I have been wrong in the past. ;-)

Why is WBQT still listed a Rhythmic AC?
Hard rap has no place on any type of AC station
Looks like some of the listings are off. They still list WMVX-AM as "Valley 98.9," while we have been documenting how the Spanish language talk format of its sister station was moved over to the AM signal, while the 98.9 translator continues to air the "Valley" brand through an HD-2 of the 102.9 translator.

To be clear, my unproven assumption is that the stations are reporting as such. WBQT is saying they are Rhythmic AC and WMVX-AM is saying that they are still "Valley." Makes sense for the latter as the 98.9 translator still identifies as WMVX on the legal station ID at the top of the hour.
