102.9/The Lake Goes All-Christmas

They began All-Christmas programming this AM (11/19) @9am. The station will air the all-holiday format through 12/26, when it will return to the Adult Hits format.

IHeartMedia/Charlotte Sr. VP/Programming A. J. said, "We are thrilled to announce the launch of Christmas music on "102.9/The Lake - Charlotte's New Home for the Holidays." "It's exciting to spread holiday cheer throughout Charlotte and the Carolinas with non-stop holiday favorites now through Christmas day."

Questions:

1. Do they think they'll beat competitor K104.7 with the Christmas format that K has had for years?
2. What kind of ratings do you think they'll receive?
3. What do you think K PD Jack Daniel thinks about this issue?
4. Does Charlotte need 2 radio stations programming holiday music 24/7 until Christmas?

Only time will tell about the ratings. The Lake had to do something, especially at this time of the year, when their direct competitor becomes the #1 rated station in the mkt., year after year. Even both stations' websites have holly on their logos: "Christmas K104.7" & "102.9 The Lake - Charlotte's New Home for the Holidays". Seems like the Lake is taking a direct shot @K - calling themselves Charlotte's "New" Home for the Holidays.

Don't know if it's true but they used to say whichever station goes Christmas first, wins Christmas. I do know that when I worked at K-104.7 many years ago both stations went all Christmas, K-104.7 watched 102.9 closely to see when they were starting. K-104.7 even had a rush to get all the Christmas music logs done in time for a quick start.....Really, you can't make this stuff up!

I don't know when they did it but 63 Big WAYS is also all-Christmas. That makes three, though you can only hear it during the day unless you're in Hickory. Their music is better as far as I'm concerned, though there's some off-the-wall rock and roll stuff I don't care for, which is at least better than the AC-sounding versions or songs that show up on the other stations.

Snoopy and the Red Baron?

It's rare these days for radio stations to advertise on TV but The Lake has a nice commercial with a boy in PJs coming down to see the tree with presents under it on Christmas morning.

Judging by the lack of comment here I’d say most really don’t care what these stations do anymore. With Apple Music or Amazon Music you can call up just about any song you can think of. I have found some really obscure stuff I didn’t expect to find on Apple Music.

I’m sure K will be #1 like always. They do this every year. People know to switch to them around this time of year for Christmas music. 102.9 hasn’t gone all Christmas since they were “Lite” 10 years ago. K won all but one year that they went head to head.

The switch to all Christmas will provide a ratings boost for Lake even if they don’t win, and I’m sure that’s what they’re going for. K, Lake and Mix are all competitive, with all three stations winning and losing different dayparts. Mix has held their own so far outside of AM drive.

On an unrelated note, Bob and Sheri have been strong so far on K. They’ve been #1 in the demo several times, most recently in September. Matt and Ramona have struggled to stay in the top 10.

Yesterday I was in the car and K played a song I didn't like (or maybe had a commercial break) so I switched to iHeart's WMAG. Then they played a song I didn't like or started a commercial break. It just happens I have a button for a station in the area where I was. That station was playing Christmas music too but The Lake interferes with the signal. And surprise: The Lake was playing the same songs I just heard on WMAG.

Oh, why are commercials a problem? They weren't on the classic country station I was listening to which by the way had one Christmas song per hour. Those breaks are frequent but short and I'm not even bothered because they'll come right back with more music. On the big stations that will not be the case.

I’ve noticed the same thing. iHeart still uses Premium Choice (or whatever it’s called now). There is no local programming in overnights. If you turn on any iHeart station that’s the same format, you’re going to hear the exact same playlist. It’s very annoying.

Are you saying you don't like those endless commercial breaks? If so, I'm with you. I have been able to get in the car and make a trip to the local grocery store before they got out of the break, and no I wasn't speeding! Never heard a single song thw whole time!
