Alaska AM DX

I smell a thread idea! TIS stations and how audible (or not) they actually are in it's designated town. Yay or nay, or somewhere in between?

For the record, mine is 530 WPQZ500 (10 watts), and it provides a noisy, but understandable signal to my house, but it does better by Dell Range.
In the early days of the expanded AM band there were reports from all over the country about the two TIS stations serving Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport. They were on 1640 and 1680. I picked up the 1640 signal once from San Diego. There was a very active DX base that got one or both of those stations stretching from California to Florida and up into the Midwest. I think it was mid-to-late 90s when I remember hearing them in my car in the parking lot of the station that I worked for. I wonder if those six big AM 1170 broadcast towers that I was parked several feet from had anything to do with that reception? Maybe not....our station was 50 Kw by day and 500 watts at night. I have not heard much in the way of reception or experienced any from there these days and the station and towers are long gone and is now a Lowe's hardware and parking lot.

Things are rebounding nicely today (Sun Nov 7th) after a total wipe out last week

738, 2NR Grafton NSW was in real good for quite awhile, and they are very very very rare here.
I had an 1161 playing what I think is classic hits and presume to be a Filipino... it sounded english during live listening but I'll listen back to my recording.

I also had Magic, Tauranga, NZ on 1107 fairly well. Not new by any means, an old stalwart in fact but normally theyre only really good when theyre playing music on the weekends. Today i had some super good speech peaks.

4BH 1116 was pretty decent, A3Z showed up a bit

1485 SValbard pounded in for a few minutes today. Had a brief showing of 1152 Romania.... 1197 Iran was briefly in.. 1026 IRan was quite strong for a brief few moments. 1413 Moldova was good. (Wed Nov 24th)

This morning I had Romania on 1179 and 1053 l, Iran on 936, 1026, 1449, Lithuania on 1386, Moldova on 1413 and Norway on 1485

And im, somewhat certain I had 4QD Emerald, QLD, Aus giveway to Radio Sawa 1548 Kuwait

Thanks. I've been checking the Arctic SDR and so far haven't had any luck. Maybe it's a good path to Alaska, but I'll keep checking.
Whenever I check the Arctic SDR recently there is quite a bit of noise. Not sure if that's only at certain times, but makes DXing tough.

I just checked McGrath, Alaska on Google maps, population 400. Man, that is remote, in the middle of the state about 500 miles from Anchorage. But close enough to the Arctic to get that skywave path from over the North Pole to your location.

I suppose most of the 20 or so Class A Alaska stations (formerly Class I-N) come in at your location at night. Even though most of them are not 50,000 watts.

I don't know how I've never visited the Anchorage, Alaska SDR before but tonight both KGO and KFBK are coming in with good signals.

No trace of KNBR or KCBS.

McGrath is barely 300.. and were only 230-250 miles from Anchorage by air.

I've heard every single AM in Alaska except KTKN 930. One of the more surprising ones is how good, and regular little 250 Watt KLAM Cordova on 1450 can be from 350 or so miles away

KNBR and KCBS ant super regulars here, but ive heard them and heard them well

KFBK is not a surprise, thats 50kw beamed with 3 towers in this general direction

Well, today was INTERESTING!

Had a weak but readable NRK P1 Svalbard on 1485, Iran was pretty strong and clear in short spurts on 1449 when escaping the 1khz het from KLAM 1450 thats 350 miles away! both occurred between 1640 and 1730.

Then shortly after 1740utc, the door flew open to more.. Talk Sport 1089 and Absolute on 1215 were in fairly to pretty good in decent spurts.

I also had Moldova on 1413 decently enough but not great. Radio Sawa, Kuwait on 1548khz showed up fairly well.

I also had what i'm nearly 100 percent positive is from Romania on 1530khz, but unsure yet if its Radio romania Actualitati or Radio Constanta. It was definately "slavic" in nature and I even heard the word Romania, but couldnt make out much else while live listening

Very nice Paul. You're in a great DX spot for this time of year.

As usual, enjoying your reports. 1530 is an interesting frequency. Just checked the Blafjoll Iceland SDR (2150 utc). I'm getting a mix of Greatest Hits Radio in the UK, Radio Romania Actualitati, and VOA Sao Tome (playing country mx in English).

Radio Constanta shows to be signing off at 2000 every day. RRA has many parallels across the band, which should help figure out which Romanian you have. Romanian is actually a Latin-based language and sounds a bit like Italian.

When im dxing on the fly and its too cold to take out my phone (26 below todya).. im sometimes limited in what i can do :)

When i get my audio off my recorder, its good enough that someone who understands romanian can tell me what network it was.

Heres the thing... the RRA network has that 1530 transmitter in the NE of the country, near Lasi where Radio Lasi on 1053 is which i hear regularly.

But they have the Constanta transmitter near the water.. which ive also learned helps proppel transpolar signals to me, so i cant rule out either one till i listen to the audio

Just curious, have you tried for any FM DX from your location in Alaska? I believe Russia and other Eastern Bloc countries still operate a few stations on the OIRT FM band. Id be interested to know if you've ever received one of these.
