Kroq and knou need help in shares

Oh my gosh now kroq and knou are tied at 1.6 and 1.4 respectively. When I saw it today my heart sank. We are losing 2 good signals to dismal shares. Somethings gotta give. Just a side note KLOS is also dismal at 2.2 on a downward spiral as well

Sorry, could not resist:

From "Screenwriter's Blues" by Soul Coughing - 1994

"It is 5 am...And you are listening...To Los Angeles
And the radioman says...It is a beautiful night out there!
And the radioman says...Rock and Roll lives!
And the radioman says...It is a beautiful night out there In Los Angeles"

Yes, please, give to the station of your choice, Los Angeles! Just remember to give, early and often!

From the other side of the ledger, we should point out that the company that owns KROQ and KNOU also has four stations in the Top 10. All the money basically goes in the same pocket. So they're not exactly hurting for shares. What they're hurting for is audiences in younger demos. They need to find a format that will help them compete with KIIS. Just about anything they could do that might help them in the share department will likely hurt them in the demo department.

Keeping a morning show on the air that the L.A. market has rejected resoundingly is not helping KNOU's cause.

Adults in their 30s & 40s is where the money is at, and as you mention, Audacy has several stations that perform well locally in that regard.

None of Audacy's local properties do a particularly good job of serving the Hispanic community. That is one area where potential opportunity may exist.

I still believe - when the moment is right - Audacy will eventually flip one of its local FMs to Sports.

Given that sports radio is not cheap, Audacy needs to find compelling personalities for sports.

KNX could go to FM, but it's a small chance, if so. KNX isn't intertwined with the local culture the way WINS, WBBM, WTOP and WBZ are.

Another long shot would be Spanish Talk. Miami has several of those stations, namely WSUA, WAQI, and WURN. I believe Puerto Rico is the same, too, in terms of having talk stations. Again, a very long shot.

KTWV could shift to a true Urban AC if billing fails to improve.

These stations have older demos, and they're mostly on AM and/or translators even on those markets. The LA market is different in that the Hispanic demos are not as affluent as those in Miami and even PR.

But my point is that Audacy needs to find a format that performs well with 18-34. They can afford to take the time to fix KROQ and KNUE because there's money coming in from the other stations. They did a similar thing when they evolved KTWV from smooth jazz to its current urban mix. At some point, that station may also need a refresh, and it may draw on The Block in NYC if that format starts to pick up.

Kroq needs a new PD. Mike Kaplan aka the show isn't where it's at. He didn't do alt 98.7 any favors. As the woody show said when he was there great guy to hang with and nice guy but terrible at his job.

The rising star is John Allers, who is working on KVIL and a few other alternative stations. Perhaps if he has some success, they'll consider expanding his portfolio. The fact that the music is at a low point doesn't help the format. But that hasn't been an issue for KYSR.

In the year 2021, it may be a waste of time trying to build a station from the ground up to superserve the 18-34 demo in tunnel vision fashion.

Often, stations that fare great in 25-54 also fare great in 18-34.

KRTH was actually #1 18-34 in November. Not often that happens for a Classic Hits station, but their success in the young demographic probably gives Audacy even more time to figure out what to do with KNOU and KROQ-FM, seeing they already have a station doing very well 18-34 anyways.

KRTH does magnificently with Hispanics. They over index there considerably.

The demos in Miami are extremely old. And PR is basically a foreign country with its own topics and interests thát are unrelated to US politics, economics and social issues.

Must be the new wave music that attracts Mexican-American listeners. K-Earth just can't get enough (no pun intended) of Depeche Mode, New Order, and a few other new wave acts; it doesn't even matter if Jack and KROQ are sister stations.
