This is legit a stunner.
I'm surprised it took them this long to find an FM frequency (unless you count KRTH-HD2). Hopefully they will stay true to their AM roots, but if history serves as a guide (hint hint KYW and WSB), the AM frequency will be dropped from the branding, even though it has a better coverage area.
And doing this right as the holiday book is underway, no less.I agree. Not something I would have done, but it demonstrates that they're giving up on reaching 18-34 with a pop music format.
They have no better ideas, so this is one way to handle things. I don't expect it will do as well as their simulcast up the coast.
Is it really a stunner, though?
Will they keep it as news station or would that just be temporary before they figure out what to do with 97 now
Proof that "the experts" are often poorly informed about these things and should be taken as no more an authority than you or me. Less than a month ago, on another thread, I predicted Audacy would make a move in LA within less than 6 months. That prediction was roundly ridiculed. Ooops!I was skeptical this would ever actually happen. I remember David saying earlier in the year that he thought they might try it but he was doubtful it would work. But it's happening, finally!

As bland as a news/talk format would be on FM, at least it will get you reliable listeners for the time being, and I doubt something better will come along for a while. On the other hand, FM is aging out, and the new 97.1 signal will get most of it's reliable listeners around rush-hour because it's easier to punch up the radio-signal for a traffic report than anything else. Also, nice Ron Paul memeWill they keep it as news station or would that just be temporary before they figure out what to do with 97 now
It does not have any better coverage of the LA Metro Survey Area. In fact, in some parts of the market, the AM suffers from man-made noise inside the supposed "primary" coverage area.I'm surprised it took them this long to find an FM frequency (unless you count KRTH-HD2). Absolutely this. Or, will Audacy blow up '94.7 The Block'? It has now dropped to 0.9 despite the new format.Won't be long before Audacy throws in the towel on 92.3 back east in NYC. Though WINS on 92.3 FM doesn't have the same ring as 1010 WINS.
Talk and all news don't share a lot of audience.Does anyone know if there is enough shared cume between KNX and KFI that this move might put significant pressure on iHeart for a simulcast there?
To my knowledge, there hasn't been aggressive marketing campaigns from Audacy for The Block. And I can't say for sure if the new antenna closer to Manhattan is officially on air. Someone fill me up on that one.Absolutely this. Or, will Audacy blow up '94.7 The Block'? It has now dropped to 0.9 despite the new format.
Yes, RFI noise as always. People who are at home where there is likely to be more noise already just uses an Alexa or something, and so the people actually tuning in would probably be driving, and hence less noise.
