Weekend GMAZ

Wow! How bad can it get? With Jaime permanently reassigned and Kylee away, it really seemed full of very awkward banter . And, oddly, there was no weather person. I had assumed that Holly Bock would take over the weather duties, since she does have a weather background.

I was going to mention what Former said. First weekend Kylee did the weather. Second Monica. Luckily both have extensive on-air weather reporting. Maybe they are waiting until Gray makes things more clearer.

Monica still can't do weather competently. She's improving as an anchor, but she does her best work as a reporter.

Two weekends ago, I literally felt sorry for Kylee. She seemed trapped there with Monica. The look on her face at times seemed to be "where the heck did Jaime and Kimmie go? Please help me!".

But, then again, weekend GMAZ has gone through bad times before -- remember Brian Webb's awful perfromance and poor Sue Breding trying to do weather? We've been blessed lately with better anchors, but it seems like we are going backwards. Frankly, Gray runs lean -- I doubt they would put anyone as good as Jaime on weekend mornings.

Reading the local weather off a National Weather Service chart is not a great skill. My 10-year old g-daughter can do it. So can a monkey with a banana.

Anyone know who (and when) started the unfortunate trend to goofy weatherguessers?
I've been here long enough to remember Art Brock, and Frank Peddie even farther back.
There was also a young-ish guy with a mustache who would flip or twirl his magic marker.

There was a guy in Tucson (Michael Goodrich?) who used to do the weather using a piece of plumbers pipe as a pointer. He was there a long time but I remember him from the late 70's.

Kylee & Monica, back together again!

Monica did the weather. Assuming Gray is waiting until the new year to bring on a weekend morning Meteorologist.?

Or extend April Warnecke and Ian Schwartz to do a weekend day each, giving them a day off during the week, and have the other do the full 5.5 hours that day?

Edit: I forgot about the Noon News. That's a long day!

OMG, it is rough.

I think she graduated from the Dewey Hopper College of Weather-guessing. Too much trying to be funny (and failing) and not enough weather.
Anecdote time: When Mr. Hopper did his first weathercast, I was watching.

I watched for several days, as he was on my personal favorite news show. After that, I sent a complaint to the GM at the TV station indicating the several reasons why I thought the station had taken a step... or three... backwards in the weather portion of the early and late evening newscasts.

After a few months, though, I found that Dewey was an acquired taste. Like asparagus and artichokes, he grew on me. At some point I realized that he was sufficiently different and he made the newscast "unique" due to its light-hearted approach.

So I think that I learned a valuable lesson from Mr. Hopper and his out of the ordinary style.

Two full weekends into the new year, and no weather person assigned. Kylee and Monica will split the weekend: Monica does Saturdays, Kylee Sundays, or vice versa. Could this be the permanent solution?

Monica is getting better with experience. She seems to have quit the joking around while still coming across as a pleasant personality. But GMAZ does need a full time weekend weather-guesser.

Did he work in Cleveland in his younger days? I've seen old ads for a station in Dayton (WLWD?) with him being the weatherman, circa late 1960s.

Hopper came to Channel 12 in the fall of 1973, replacing the somewhat-stuffy Frank Peddie. That's where and when I first saw him.

Dewey was a follower of the weather-clown school of forecasting. Others of that ilk in the late 1960s and early '70s included John Coleman at WBKB/WLS-TV Chicago, Ward Allen at WITI Milwaukee, and a kid named David Letterman who did weekends at WLWI Indianapolis. I'm sure most large and mid-sized markets had at least one.

I guess, perhaps, we got used to having a full time weekend GMAZ weather anchor, but none of the other stations have a full time weekend morning weather anchor. ABC15 has one of the anchors do the weather as does Fox10. 12News uses a recorded forecast from the previous evening (trying to make it appear that the weather anchor is actually there). Anyone remember when 12 STOOD for local news?!?
