Adios Fox 10 Phoenix

Since my retirement 20 years ago my morning routine has included a portion of Fox 10's AM/AZ. Over the years I have liked and appreciated the people and the stories which seemed much more independent than those of the Fox network. But these are not the reasons I am waving goodbye.

I usually tuned in about 7am and watched for an hour or two. These past few mornings I've tuned into the stream from my phone at about 6am. In between the news stories are run the same series of commercials - over and over and over again. About one dozen different commercials, usually in the same sequence until it made me look for an open window in which to throw my phone. To make matters worse these are the most obnoxious commercials blared at top volume - just like the much maligned car dealers.

I became used to Fox 10 AZ/AM being not much more than several hours of poorly disguised commercials (segments from various businesses around town) but the presentation and interaction of the talented personalities kept me from switching channels.

But now the time has come.

Watching Fox AZ/AM has now reached the status of a digital sub-net. You know the ones. They have only five customers, three of whom are human or animal charities and the other two are hawking OTC drugs or scammy insurance policies. They too run their commercial sets every break and make watching any programming an excruciating experience.

Except for their live broadcasts of football and the occasional NASCAR race I have considered Fox 10 to be the bottom feeder of Phoenix' premier TV stations but I did enjoy their morning show. The video theft of Syleste from Channel 12 was classic! It will be difficult to say goodbye to Troy, Syleste, Ron, Renee and yes, even Cory but I find I must do so to keep my sanity.

And by the way Troy: Mackinac, MI is pronounced MACK-in-naw.

Thanks for the memories. Adios...

Good Morning Arizona is little better. About 1/2 real news/weather and half paid "personal appearances" by the reporters.

I won't even go into their advertisers: Accident lawyers, political groups, and sports betting. Ethically-challenged all. Apparently Gray is as bad as Meredith. If the old Television Code were still in effect, KTVK/KPHO would have gone bankrupt years ago.

Quick aside. I have Cox cable, haven't cut the cord. I watch 3TV/CBS 5 for local news and ABC15 for national news. One thing I've noticed is the commercial for lawyer Jimmy Cook. The 3TV version is MUCH louder than ABC15.

Id wager those are online only commercials and not over the air, because if thats all they had on air, they wouldnt last. Some people will pay etxra for the streaming

Trying watching it over the air and see if its different before you act like a grumpy old man over what pays the bills and ditch them....and if youre ditching them over some commercials, thats pretty petty

I can't speak about other streaming services, but what I receive via YouTube TV is exactly what I receive via antenna, commercials and all. The only difference is a 1 minute delay.

Tried that. Most of the streaming commercials air also OTA but not in constant, tight rotation. There are some OTA commercials that don't appear over streaming.

I'm being deluged with loud, distasteful and crappy commercials and you say I am acting like a grumpy old man? I don't think so Tim. What would you do if your favorite show pissed you off every time you turned it on? You'd move on which is exactly what I said I was doing. I realize commercials are a fact of life in broadcast media but if there are too many of them or if they repeat the same old BS constantly I'm gone. I've given them a chance to wow me with their commercials but they've failed. Miserably.

FYI, according to Ron Hoon's Instagram that I can't post here, Cory McCloskey is moving to prime time weather duties after 20 years on mornings...Ty Brennan replaces him as full time weatherman.

Cory does do some very brief weather but his main function in the past several years has been special features (read: commercials carefully disguised as 'information' on local businesses). He has been my least favorite of the AZ/AM performers. Ty seems like a good replacement so I might give AZ/AM another try.

I still don't know why every TV station in the Valley feels the need for a dedicated weather person. What weather there is is as close as your phone.

@landtuna

1) Get a Roku box.
2) Find the NewsON channel; load if necessary.
3) "Watch live, local TV newscasts for FREE from nearly 200 trusted local news stations across the U.S. with the NewsON app. No cable subscription or login required. Enjoy local news with NewsON anytime, anywhere!"

You might think a Top 15 television market would have some A-rated talent. There's many more, reading most of the same stories, in other markets that are enjoyable to watch.

That is all.
