A Spin Around the Local News Dial

I had an extended stay with my folks over the Christmas holidays. Always a weird time to check in on local news, but with bad weather I did tune in a few times.

Here's some thoughts ...

KCPQ - Matthew Smith was anchoring Christmas Evening. I hadn't seen him at KIRO, but he's nothing special. Not a great voice, bland delivery, kinda wooden. Erin Mayovsky was doing weather, something she's never been great at and probably wasn't the talent you'd want at the weather wall in a major snow storm. She seems to stick around in this market because she'll work any shift, any where, any time, including in this case, Christmas evening. AJ Maneval had a nice report from some snowy roads, but his entire appearance was very casual/scruffy which was a bit out of place. New branding, graphics and music package matches the Fox O&O in Los Angeles and is fine though I hate losing the legacy Q13 branding.

KIRO - Elle Thomas was the anchor. She's capable but her on camera presence is what I'd call 'over coached.' It feels like every little detail has been rehearsed - nothing about her presentation seemed natural. Reminds me of Sabra Gertsch from KOMO years ago. Ilona McCauley had the weather and was excellent. I see she's working part time for KIRO as the regular weekend morning meterologist, which means they finally split that role out from the do everything AM/PM weekend weather role. McCauley has a lot of weather experience and similar just comes across as someone who really has a good handle on the weather - particularly in a storm situation. I do miss seeing Tiffany Sanders and Todd Johnson as the weather fill-ins.

KING - While the set and TEGNA sound/graphics package still sucks, the tone of the station is much more serious than a few years ago when TEGNA first took over and we had to suffer through Lori Matsukawa barely restraining herself from a giant eyeroll as she gave us an update on 'what's trending.'

A few years ago I commented that I wasn't as concerned with the young age of the talent they were bringing in, after all Elisa Hahn and Susannah Frame were in their mid-20s when they started and developed into top notch career reporters. The problem was much of the talent that came in just wasn't very good. Bad voices, crappy writing, little camera presence. Luckily, taking a look at the bios page, it seems that most of that wave of talent hired from 2015-2018 seems to have exited. The new names I saw this weekend looked good, sounded good, and have a lot of promise.

Additionally, they've started bringing in mid-career talent. Steve Soliz, who I believe is the weekend evening anchor, is excellent. Deep voice, natural delivery and a ton of presence on camera.

Over in the weather center, after the revolving door the last six years, the current line-up has a lot of promise. You could do worse than Rich Marriott (I was disappointed Rich was off this morning - no snow storm in Seattle can happen with Rich Marriot in the weather center when you wake up) and Rebecca Stevenson working your main weekday newscasts. Adam Claibon's voice is a bit nasally, but his forecast and work on the weather wall was excellent. Mike Everett, who seems to be doing weekend mornings + a couple of weekday late mornings / middays, is another mid-career guy KING has picked up and he is excellent.

I saw what felt like an old school Belo KING 5 Weather Team promo during a commercial break featuring Rich/Rebecca/Mike/Adam. Really felt like they were leaning back into their weather legacy - though clearly 4 full time meteorologists is a bit lean for KING given the number of news hours they produce.

I was happy to see a package from market veteran Amy Moreno, and young reporter Christine Pae was impressive. She's the kind of promising young talent that Elisa Hahn was in the late 90s and I hope she sticks around and grows her career. Shout out to Stephen Kilbreath who I saw filling in for Marriott last week. He's not known as either a tv guy or a weatherman but did a nice job, even in an open collar shirt + suit combo. Some of us will always remember him as drawing the short straw at Metro Traffic and getting doing traffic for KUBE right as the T-Man was kicking off ... they had so much fun with his last name I don't know how they ever got any traffic in.

Wow, these are excellent thoughts and perspectives! No KOMO watching?

Also, Stephen Kilbreath I've heard of before, thanks to now-defunct NWCN.

And tell me if I'm wrong on this... KCPQ/KZJO just seems bad, KIRO is 'okay' but not the best and KING/KONG has went back to pre-Gannett into getting serious again and is really really good now.

Interesting observations! As for King 5 Weather, they have job postings for both a Chief Meteorologist and a Meteorologist. So, I would assume that they are looking for at least 1 (if not 2) additional Weather anchors. Honestly, if Rich wants to work for a few more years, just name him Chief. Then, hire 1 or 2 more good people to fill out the Weather team.

As for KIRO, I just noticed that they have removed Dave Wagner's bio from the website! I guess he's gone.

Interesting. KING hasn't had a "chief" since Jeff Renner took the buyout. They may be hiring only one position but want to see whose applications they get when they are advertising for chief. If they don't like what they see, they can keep the status quo and just hire another staff meteorologist.

Rich Marriott has had the title "senior meteorologist" for a few years now. Its uncommon, but not unheard of, for the chief to work mornings. It doesn't seem like they want to go in this direction, or they would have already given him that title.

I'm a little surprised they don't just give Rebecca the chief title and move on. Of course, over my nearly 20 years on this board I've been vocal about my issues with her - perhaps those same issues are showing up in the market research they are most certainly doing. She's a good, familiar face to have around, but may not be the personality you want to lead your weather team.

Over at KIRO, Dave Wagner officially "retired" Dec 1.

Wagner was the best KIRO anchor in years. Too bad.

As for KCPQ, it has been a merry go round of talent for over a year. That can’t be helpful.

KING may be improving in content but they need better optics, and have since 2015 when they moved to Sodo. I wonder if another move is being explored.

KOMO looks best in show. They just keep on chugging along with decent anchors and still the best look in the market.

Yes, as I've previously documented here, Steve Raible was main anchor from 1994-2020.
He was paired with:
Susan Hutchison
Margaret Larson
Joyce Taylor
Susan Hutchison
Kristy Lee
Margo Myers
Angela Russell
Monique Ming Laven

There's a lot of talent on that list - people who have had successful careers before sitting down along side Raible. Monique Ming Laven lasted the longest.

Dave Wagner was a revelation, providing the strong male co-anchor KIRO needed, but didn't have, for 26 years.

Yes, KING needs to just blow up that studio. I just can't get over all these wideshots where we see cameras just hanging out in the middle of the set. The view where they back off the anchor desk and have the weatherman standing off to the side with a camera between him and the desk looks awful.

If they have to move the weather center to another room in the building to make more room for the news set, they should do that. At least the production glitches seem to finally have cleared up.

I didn't tune into KOMO this trip, but for all the crap Sinclair gets, they're clearly putting the most investment in their local news product in Seattle. I have high hopes that FOX can stabilize KCPQ. They know how to run a good local news operation. I believe that KTTV in Los Angeles has the best local newscasts in market, and its not even close.

Great thoughts, and I agree. The goals for Seattle locals in 2022:

KCPQ: settle down, start building an anchor staff that will stay put.

KIRO: Be more aggressive like they were in the 80’s.

KING: move into a space that makes sense. Dump sodo.

KOMO: just keep doing what you are doing. But look for another major anchor.

Here are my thoughts:

KCPQ: Fox will likely bring in new anchors to fill the slots.

KIRO: Bring back the KIRO News Jet and the "News Specialists" branding!

KING: For heaven sakes, get another meteorologist -- so you don't work your weather team to death.

KOMO: The future is Preston Phillips!

Good Lord.

Can't speak specifically for Seattle TV newsrooms, but something you don't see happening behind the scenes: Like many businesses, COVID is hitting TV newsrooms particularly hard lately. Starting last week, many parent companies are requiring stations to again reduce the number of in-person talent, meteorologists, or reporters. Some newsroom folks aren't feeling well, so the companies are requiring them to stay home for a week or more AFTER symptoms subside and they've passed at least two negative tests. That means those remaining either report remotely, or come into the station for more shifts. Add-in planned holiday vacations, and not being in a critical ratings period, and it's pretty common to see the same folks working extra hours.
The aforementioned includes station HR departments. In-person interviews have been reduced to nil, and many hiring managers are working from home too.
Given these circumstances that aren't apparent to you as a viewer; maybe you should consider cutting them a little slack.

Kelly -- My responses were clearly "tougue-in-cheek"! I was being sarcastic.

Of course, I understand that all businesses are resource-constrained these days, due to the pandemic.

Sarcasm is always difficult on threads like this. But seriously KING should bring back Jean Enerson and Mike James. And they should broadcast from the parking garage of a condo at 320 Aurora North. Happy new year!

BTW, I was responding to your post using your exact format. I thought it would be pretty obvious that I was joking. Sorry I seemed to cause so much confusion!

You were the one who brought up the 80's at KIRO -- that always makes me think of the KIRO News Jet, the "News Specialists" branding, live reports for no apparent reason and the KIRO "fanfare" theme music.... Seriously, they can't "go back" to the future....KIRO will need to chart a new course for their news products or accept the mediocrity that they've had for years now.

Rebecca Stevenson's bio is no longer on the KING 5 website. Mistake or did she leave KING?
She hasn't been on since Saturday. Everyone she retweeted today was a KOMO reporter. Is she moving over there to work at 4/4 stations in the market?

That's my thinking... she's now at KOMO.

Fox 13 renaming morning news again to Good Day Seattle this week? Tv listing had it all renamed to good day but now it just lists the 9am hour
