Format flips predictions of 2022

Just wanted to get everyone's prediction for 2022. Wonder who will flip? Who wont. Anyone?
I was extremely shocked that KNOU just up and flipped to KNX last months, so maybe that's a sign for 570 KLAC (Sports) or 640 KFI (Talk) will be next in line. I just can't figure out a good spot on the normal FM band for a simulcast, but HD subchannels could be the way to go for both of them.

The first station to flip in LA will probably be to News or Sports, or possibly something of an Adult Alternative station.

You did say HD subchannels

I know it doesn't necessarily qualify as a format change, but I've wondered for years why the KTLA 5 Morning News is not the "morning drive-time" show on one of the LA FM stations. Prior to getting into their cars to go to work, thousands upon thousands were just watching it on TV, and it would be great for people to just punch it up on their car radios and continue listening. Yes, I know you can already get it on your phone, but radio is so simple---that's the beauty of it!

I am by no means an expert, but Entravision might want to consider flipping KDLD and KDLE 103.1. They are currently sitting at a 0.8 share with the current Cumbia format, which has shown to be somewhat limited and even somewhat outadated in today's day. Like I said, I am not an expert, but I don't see how a cumbia format by itself can help bring back 103.1

What has always held back 103.1 is their lousy signal with no chance to upgrade, I don't see any format getting decent ratings.

Those are the same numbers indie 103.1 got on kdld and probably what channel 103.1 got when it was AAA. Seems to me anything on that frequency will get the same results. The old saying you keep doin what your doin you will keep getting what ur getting.

They sell that format in combination with the rest of the cluster. It is additive.

That is true. I remember them bringing back the Super Estrella format on 103.1 a few years back, and reception anywhere west of Downtown LA was bad. The most they ever got out of that format I think was like a 1.0 share with averages of 0.6.

I did not know this. Do you think they will eventually break the KLYY KSSE simulcast and introduce a new non regional mexican format on the original KSSE trimulcast, or is Entravision still satisfied with the current setup?

Now that KNX has its own analog home on FM, I want KRTH to flip 101.1 HD2 back to K-Earth Classics. Having KNX on three separate signals now (97.1, 1070, 101.1-2) is an insane waste of space. Remember when the FCC used to be against mere AM/FM simulcasts?

They should have done that in the early 1990s during the Amezcua/Beck/Kriski/Rubin/Spillman/York/Newman era. Some of those broadcasts were borderline Ice House-tier comedy circuses by the standards of their time. I remember cutting school at least twice to stay home and watch when things got especially outrageuos.

I don't know how this guy finds all the tapes he's digitized, but check out Sloan's TV Airchive on Youtube. He has clips of local news from tons of stations all over the country dating back decades. Including several full broadcasts of those early Morning News days. There are also several of Hal Fishman's excellent 10 o'clock news -- the only local news production I've ever held in high regard.

They need both signals... KLYY and KSSE... to cover much of the LA metro survey area. They still miss pieces, but it seems to be working.

The other two trimulcast stations on KSSE are worthless, as they don't cover any significant part of the LA metro.

I'm still a vote for KFI on FM.

Surprised at how much more I'm listening to KNX this past month. Lived in SoCal since 2018 and I tuned into KNX more frequently as a DXer in Utah than I did living here as a local. Now KNX 97.1 is probably my second-most-listened-to station behind KDAY.

What iHeart station would I sacrifice? That's the tough one. Everything looks pretty strong.

David, how open are the FCC toward LMAs counting toward your ownership cap? Or could iHeart dump KEIB AM and pick up an FM (if someone were willing to sell) and stay under the cap?

Here's the rule, and it hasn't been changed in 25 years:

 In a radio market with 45 or more stations, an entity may own up to eight radio stations, no more than five of which may be in the same service (AM or FM).

There was briefly a fad of simulcasting TV newscasts on radio during drive times in the 1990s. Never happened in L.A., apart from a Spanish-language simulcast of Channel 4 on KALI (before SAP channel translations).

Failed in every market where it was tried. The most essential issue is that TV is visual. There’s always going to be “watch closely” or “look at this amazing video”, which is frustrating for anyone who can’t.

I actually worked for a station that did this in the 2010s! The format was R&B, but there was TV News audio at 4pm daily.

It never made sense to me, but the GM valued the 10 second spots promoting the arrangement on TV pretty highly, as if the audience for TV news on the radio, and R&B music had significant overlap.

indeed, I think in the recent past KABC 790 was simulcasting part of KNBC 4's news at 6pm. Don't know how long it lasted...
