KQOB 96.9 "Alice" switching formats

On December 3, 2021, Cumulus announced it would end its LMA with KQOB on January 1, 2022, and will flip to a simulcast of conservative talk station KZLS as "96.9 The Eagle". Just before midnight Alice 96.9 played Hall & Oats Man Eater, and then switched to a simulcast of sister station 99.7 HANK FM!

I don't think Champlin knows what to do with this station. The apparent hole in the market is Classic Rock. iHeart didn't execute the format properly on 94.7, so they decided to flip to yet a THIRD FM sports station.

If Champlin hired a proven classic rock PD that knows his stuff and a couple of dinosaur jocks they could pull a 4 share easily in a market that currently has a tie at the top with two stations at a 5.0. Chances are they won't spend the money, but the opportunity is there.

If not, they should just sell it to a religious group like everyone else that doesn't have a clue.

Alice? Alice? Who the.....
Who knows??... In my opinion, that was a weird image(?) for any station. Their slogan was "The new Alice 96.9. We play anything". No they didn't. I never could figure out what demo they were aiming for, their play list just seemed to be all over the board, but there was tons of music/bands I never heard them play, can't recall anything dated before about 1980. Glad it's gone now.

All we have for Classic Rock is KRXO, and they've weeded out their playlist over the years so I don't find it enjoyable much these days. Closest thing to KRXO is KOMA, and what ticks me off about them is hearing some of the same tunes as on KRXO. I know there's basically just one wall that separates the two studios...but REALLY?!?! Calling it Classic Rock, switching freqs and calling the same tune the Best of the 80's?? Give me a break. Just to have something refreshing to listen to, I've gone to the internet KVKVI.com or shortwave WTWW at 5085 Khz in order to get some oldies I haven't heard in years with their instant request.

KRXO, the sports station?

Looks like there are too many country and sports stations cluttering up the FM. Perhaps someone should switch to classic rock, but who?

Classic rock and oldies have always had overlap. That's not a new problem. It may have been a little smaller when classic hits was still oldies because classic rock didn't play very many songs older than 1968, but rock songs have always hit the pop charts. Those rock songs have always been played on classic pop stations, too.

I can agree that 104.5 KRXO doesn't sound as good as 107.7 KRXO from 20 years ago, but it still sounds better than any classic rock station in Tulsa. Tulsa's Eagle is one of the most boring classic rock stations I've ever heard. I can't work to it; it practically puts me to sleep. KMOD is fine, but it's more active than classic rock. 93.5 The Jet is okay musically, but the presentation is so generic it's obviously canned. I'm sure 104.5 KRXO is mostly voicetracked and run cheaply, but at least Tyler seems to be putting some effort into it.

Very odd that Oklahoma City is the largest market in the U.S. with no Classic Rock station. Denver and Portland (both Oregon and Maine) have two Classic Rockers. Equally odd that there are THREE full-power FM sports stations.

I can understand that the owner of KQOB wants to keep costs down, which was the case when it was running Adult Hits, a format which usually goes with no live voices. But surely there are satellite delivered Classic Rock formats out there you can just throw on with no investment in DJs or local programming.

There's no need to simulcast an older-skewing talk format from your AM station, as if you have run out of ideas for your 100,000 watt FM station, especially with a line up of third ranked talk shows. Hugh Hewitt, Todd Schnitt, Joe Pags... these are shows his AM station runs because other stations in the market already have the Premiere Network and Westwood One line ups. Now they're on a high power FM with little hope of attracting an 18-49 or 25-54 audience.
