Jillian Mele moves from Fox News to 6ABC WPVI

Former Fox News host Jillian Mele has landed a new job back home in Philadelphia.

The Glenside native joined 6ABC last week as a reporter and anchor on Action News, the station confirmed to The Inquirer. It’s unclear when viewers will see Mele on TV — 6ABC offered no further details, and Mele could not be reached for comment.

Mele joins 6ABC at a time of transition. Longtime Action News anchor Jim Gardner will deliver his final 11 p.m. newscast this month, but will continue on the 6 p.m. newscast until he retires at the end of the year. In September, his longtime colleague David Murphy said goodbye to 6ABC after 31 years as a meteorologist and reporter.

Congrats to life after Fox News.

More an expression of surprise at this hire, and what appears to be some cheapening of the operation. No one is ever immune from the need for the second part of that equation but it still is a bit surprising after not seeing it happen for what felt like a lifetime.

Jillian Mele was actually a news anchor at Fox News Channel. Even though she was on Fox & Friends, she reported the news headlines and wasn't one of the opinion anchors on the show. Or are you saying that she was on Channel 10 and Comcast Sports Net and Channel 6 never hires anchors/reporters from other Philly stations? She was actually reporting from Magnolia, NJ the other day from an accident involving a fire truck. It's the first time I saw her on the air on Channel 6.

While they used to never take competition, that has changed on rare occasion—Jessica Boyington, Jeff Skeversky come to mind, but that’s about it. If anything it flows the other way. And they nabbed Tamala Edwards from ABC.

Fox News though is something new entirely.

More budget cuts?

Where there’s smoke there’s likely fire here. Throwing in some new reporters, but…
-Not replacing the second morning meteorologist
-Not having a regular noon meteorologist
-Not replacing the medical reporter
-Not replacing the Sunday night co-anchor
-Not adding a 10 pm co-anchor
Now, it seems, down to two sports people.

The budget axe seems to be repeatedly swinging.

A few months ago on another discussion board there was mention of an anecdote of the new executive in charge of the ABC local stations group allegedly told management to “bring WPVI into this century”.

Granted rumors are flying WPVI is going to replace MCTYW after Jim officially leaves but I take that with a grain of salt, but a lot of other ABC O&O’s have been making budget cuts lately as well and WPVI is apparently not immune any longer as folks retire.

While never ruling out the potential stupidity of humankind, the idea of retiring the theme song is…idiotic, to be kind, if anyone is contemplating it.

As for bringing the station into this century….um, it’s there. Not sure what station said/rumored executive is watching, draconian budget cuts aside.

Interesting—Jamie Apodaca posted she needed to learn to be her own photographer and editor. It wasn’t framed as a criticism but rather as proud of learning the skills, and good for her. And by no means is she alone, but come on—this is the top station in a top market and they’re squeezing the product something fierce.

Latest move sees Gray Hall move to weeknights at 10. Reasonable guess he adds 5 and Rick takes 6 when Jim fully retires?

A little surprising a weekday person didn’t get to move up and Gray take that slot, but progression doesn’t seem to be their focus.

Mele pressed into service for morning duty despite their usual practice of having new-to-PVI (regardless the past experience) do some low profile Saturday mornings to get the feel. Nydia covering Walter Perez would make her unavailable for morning, but this is odd that no other fill ins were available or Tam couldn’t be there again.

But that comes on the heels of Matt O’Donnell doing 4 am, 4 pm 5 pm 6pm and 11 pm Friday, and apparently doing evenings again today.

A single anchor Sunday morning, which is rare. Vacations are one thing (and Gardner has already posted about visiting overseas), but this is rather odd that effectively no regulars were in their slots except Matt Friday, and he had to do a marathon. Adam Joseph broadcasting from home last week a few days…

Something is “in the water” and not in the “baby boom” kind of way.

Is this week 2 that Rick has been on his road trip now? Sheesh lol.

I know there was some chatter back on Wednesday and Thursday about Sarah also pulling long shifts, but Matt’s really takes the cake!

Makes sense.

Speaking of Jillian she anchored this evening at 4, 5, and also did a story at 6. Yikes just what is going on there?

Saw a promo for this week's FYI Philly with TaRhonda Thomas hosting with Alicia. You know it's bad over there when they have to have a hard news reporter host the station's entertainment show.

I think that Jillian Mele is being groomed to get
Jim Gardners 6PM slot. She has all the qualifications and is easy on the eyes.

That seems questionable. Apart from Jim winding down, no one anchors a mere 30 minutes. That scenario would leave all other teams presumably in place. They’d need to do something else with her, and field reporting for 4 and 5 would be out. Maybe be a live reporter at 10 and 11.

I think more likely Rick Williams assumes 6 pm, Gray Hall adds 5 pm. There’s also just no way they’re planning Gray only does one show and one stream.
