KVRI 1600 Blaine, WA

This station targets the punjab community in the Vancouver area and not exactly a surprise, but it is incredibly strong here in McGrath, Alaska!! It's 10KW/6 tower night pattern is right along the waterfront and beams right up the coast. If I draw a line from it's tower array and main lobe, its pointed almost dead center at my general area.

Not unexpected but still amazing considering KVRI is 1500 miles away! They are my most consistent station... the strongest, most regular. I hear the 50kw'ers from Vancouver 1320,, 1470, 1130, 730, etc.... but this one tops them all by noticeable amounts.

Here's some audio of the station with the audio filter widened to 6khz on my CC CRane Skywave with my FSL loop tuned up:

You should hear them in Anchorage. They throw literally every watt in that direction. You can barely hear KVRI in Mount Vernon, 40 miles south, but 40 miles north just over the border on the same frequency, smoke practically comes out of your radio. And 1600 kHz is a literally perfect (if not officially designated) Clear Channel in BC/AK.

I'm about 250 miles NW of Anchorage

KVRI has a prime tower placement right by Semiamoo. Surprisingly, I always had a hard time picking up that station up in other area south of the array (demonstrating how a highly directional pattern can make a huge difference). Lots of power thrown toward Alaska on 1600, 1130, and 730.

On a similar (but unrelated) topic, I wonder if the programming is ever going to change over on 1550, particularly now that they have a local signal on 600. Seems like the other station wouldn’t be needed anymore.

Id actually say 1320 and 1470 are better here then 1130 and 730.... 1130 isnt far behind 1320 and 1470.. but 730 does lag behind the rest... and it has to do i think with the frequency..... higher frequency skips different

May also involve protection because Vancouver has 730 that has been prominent for years. Was CKLG, a powerhouse Top 40, and in recent years has been Traffic/Border/Ferry/Weather - 24/7

I hear KVRI nightly in the Seattle area. Mt. Vernon perhaps is inside their 'skip zone'.

When KJR was broadcasting from Tacoma (KHHO site) they had 50kw beaming directly north. The plot of the pattern looked like the flame on a zippo lighter... Used to get QSL's from Scandinavia all the time, until the transmitters moved to Vashon. Kelly A. might remember what the ERP going north would have been.

Around 300kW to the North.

950 here is a mush of Seattle and someone else... *edit: not san francisco* .. I forget who at the moment
