Jeny flips again!

Anyone I asked about JenY thought it was a station aimed at women. No one caught the "Generation Y" allusion, way over their heads. But it was creative.
I wouldn't look to see much of a move away from a jockless presentation. As commented by another poster, owners feel there is no return of the investment for live local announcers or even voice trackers anymore. The audience 107.3 is aimed at listens to almost all their music jockless from the websites and they have had no exposure to anything resembling real DJs or radio personalities other than chatty morning shows or talk radio which they don't associate with their music. No one is going to spend scarce dollars to attempt to expose them to it, there's insufficient reward in today's market.
The jenY name and concept was a good one, but the execution was too clever by far. People will think about your brand for about half a second. If they can't figure it out in that time, you've lost them. jenY was not only an odd name, it was an unfamiliar format - has anyone ever managed to get cut-through with Modern AC in any market? A weird name and weird music was never going to make a splash.

The new branding is boring - just as boring as all those Alt and New Country and Wolf/Fox/Eagle stations, but people know three things immediately on seeing the name: what it plays, where it's from, where on the dial to find it. Commercially, it's a much better brand.

I find it rewarding to listen to new music even though, when I'm at home, I usually listen to 1960s and 1970s music. It is exhilarating to hear a new song that I like. I'm not a big Hip-Hop fan, but I really like "Need To Know" by Doja Kat, as an example. Every once in a while, a, usually big hit, old song will be interpolated into a new song. Elton John is currently on the charts with "Cold Heart", a big hit that he performs in a duet with Dua Lipa. It successfully uses his hit song "Rocket Man", and other Elton John songs as its base.

Ski, you may also enjoy checking out the recent (a few years ago) remake of the Ben E. King classic, "Stand By Me" done by Florence and The Machine. "Florence" is Florence Welsh.

I did check it out. Very nice version, great voice. I Googled Florence and it says she has a vocal range of three octaves.

It seemed that JenY gave some Alternative listeners in Cleveland the perception of being a female-leaning station and that ended up being a turn off. I also think that those billboards before its launch and the subsequent Modern AC format/playlist turned people off from trying the station or tuning in beyond sampling.
 
Wish them the best. Hope they are able to attract an audience and target the appropriate potential advertising businesses. Gotta have both: adequate audience and ad revenues.
 
Regarding the new morning team of Kris Drew and Jaci Fox, Drew is actually coming back to the same post he had during the Jeny days.

Fox is a former weekender/utility player at Star 102/Q 104.
 
This is the format they SHOULD have gone with right from the beginning....unfortunately you only get one chance to make a first impression. How else are they getting the word out about the flip to a more traditional alternative format? I know a lot of people who miss the old Alt 99x, but I highly doubt they have any idea what 107.3 is doing these days. Doesn't help that its at an obscure place on the dial.

My guess is most people who gave the station a listen because of the vague JENY billboards were quickly turned off by the bizarre mix of music they were initially playing.
 
A harder-edged alternative format like that often found at 92.3 FM prior to its flip to Sports probably would've been a better choice, but I do agree that the current product is an improvement from JenY's Modern AC days.

There have got to plenty of Rock listeners in the market who are sick of the babble fest on MMS.

With RCRG owning no other stations in Cleveland, and with alternative typically underindexing in terms of revenue per ratings point, this station almost assuredly will be a very weak revenue performer.
 
Few local businesses seek primarily men age 35 and under as their core advertising targets. Just very limited ad dollars for radio and other traditional medias in that age demo. This is the case in most markets, especially older markets like Cleveland. And, really...are people that age heavy radio listeners in 2022? Maybe in pre-internet and smart phone years they were, but now? Doubtful.

Hmm... I guess that explains those ED commercials that have been playing almost every commercial break on Majic 105.7.

I would listen to FM radio more if there was more variety in the music. Too many similarly formatted stations that play the same 50 songs over and over again, and very little formats aimed at a niche audience...Those that have do have limited coverage. Majic & The Lake are about 80% similar to the point that I sometimes lose track on which station I'm listening to, or pretending to listen to. Maybe if radio stations offer more variety and are locally programmed like they once were, perhaps more listeners will tune in. And yes, I understand that advertisers have a lot to do with the station's format and selection of songs that they play.
