Backtiming to the news...

Some listeners MIGHT care but for the most part, just radio geeks and some radio people might give two hoots.

I back timed right into network news on one of the most unique NPR affiliates in the country today with a service area of over 600 miles and its hella fun and a good polishing of skills if nothing else.

Here's a short video:

At my first station, leading into network news with instrumentals was for wimps. We loved coming out of the 50 break, playing 2 songs tight, no gap, with the second being "Sir Duke", with the cold ending hitting the ID and ABC Information

In the age of using the public Internet as an STL, back-timing to hit TOH doesn't matter anymore. That said; glad you're enjoying the process.

My first time on the air was at a small market station that was a full service AC, You had to back-time to, I think, UPI News on the hour, UPI Sports at :15 and :45 and the State Network News at :30. Add Weather and Lake report at :20 and :40 plus the Bulletin Board at :50 along with the commercial load of about a dozen spots and you had the scenario. To put it mildly, it was tough but even with it being my first time behind the board, I knew going to an instrumental was a sign of being an amateur. I pulled it off but it sure wasn't pretty.

@Kelly A maybe I'm confused, What does the internet as an STL have to do with this? This is done locally.. and the NPR news is live at :01 after. WE do use the internet as an STL for our outerlying village FM signals (class D non comms, no translators).. but that hs nothing to do with how i hit the news

Because many stations now use the public Internet to feed their transmitter sites. Depending on where the site is; the delay before any audio gets to the TX can be variable between a couple seconds or even minutes. In that case, hitting the TOH is no longer a good indicator to listeners of the true TOH like it used to be in the 'old days'. That, and many networks now just deliver their news as a file to drop into your automation playlist. Having to hit the TOH network news is even less of a factor.

Notice i didnt say TOH, backtiming to the news.. which is live at 01 after and internet plays no factor in that.

So why back-time into a playlist file? It plays when it plays.

No, its LIVE.... NPR's 5 minuTe newscast is LIVE live live from 01 to 06 after

That 00-01 is used by the network to preview the next hour of the news magazine or show thats on the air.. or affiliates breakway for weather/sponsor.

When we have local shws on 8am to 4pm, we run the news at 8am and 12noon to 4pm....... we just roll into the news at 01 after, LIVE.

So haven't you needed to back-time into the news anyway? What's so special about what you're doing now?

We dont always, no.. during some local shows, we do the ID at 00 after and have an instrumental to fill that one minute. Its how it was set up long before i got here and havent tried to train my one volunteer and one dj to back time for no real reason then other things are more important

I never said what I was doing was great or important, just nerdishly fun and good practice for some radio geeks.. no one else cares
