KFI Debuts Show with LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva

https://news.****************/articles/n41674/KFI-Debuts-Show-with-LA-County-Sheriff-Alex-Villanueva

iHeartMedia's Talk KFI-AM/Los Angeles has announced the debut of "Live and Unscripted with LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva," Sundays from 8-10pm from its studios in Burbank. The new weekly program is hosted by Alex Villanueva, who runs the country's largest sheriff's department. Every Sunday, listeners can join the show to hear the topics on the mind of L.A. County residents: homelessness, crime, corruption and politics. Villanueva will also feature guests who will explain the inner workings of the various bureaus in his department.

Villanueva sometimes butts heads against the entrenched interests at City Hall, so this is a big coup for him - two hours to say what he wants on a major media outlet.

With all due respect to your intent, the Sheriff is a county law enforcement official and therefore butts heads with the County Board of Supervisors, who do not meet at City Hall (more accurately, they meet at the County Hall of Administration).

You are correct Mr. Technical. Missed the overall point, but still.

No, I got your point. You always somehow manage to overlook when I say things like "with all due respect to your intent".

I just thought you would want to be accurate, since you pride yourself on that.

And, just for the record, I think Villanueva does create too much friction in the way he handles himself, and there are indeed also "entrenched interests" at the HofA.

HofA? House of Azazel? Anyway, 'Fairness Doctrine' ended in 1987, I believe, but isn't there still a time frame leading up to election day where candidates must temporarily get off air or give other candidates equal time?

Once he declares that he will run again, he is required to leave his radio show.

Thanks for the info! I wonder if this guy can actually entertain as well as do the police union narrative. If he can entertain then he may have a job if he looses reelection.

How is Sheriff Villanueva thought of in LA County? I don't know much about him and despite his last name it seems like any law enforcement based program is going to only appeal to the so-called "Old Angry White Male" demographic.

Most L.A. County Sheriffs are controversial. Villanueva has gone all-in on that:

KNBC did a special program on the candidates for Sheriff:

This radio show is going to become an issue.

if any licensee shall permit any such candidate to use its facilities, it shall afford equal opportunities to all other candidates for that office to use such facilities. Such licensee shall have no power of censorship over the material broadcast by any such candidate.

This is all good for KFI. They will ultimately conform to the FCC requirements as they need to protect the license, but they're not going to get their license taken for small and temporary teapot tempests such as this one. In the meantime this helps the station be a little more "stimulating" and generates a lot of cheap publicity.

The license isn’t at risk, but iHeart would rather not be fined.

The only way to conform is to not do the show. If they don’t do that this week, they’re going to end up paying lawyers to respond to FCC requests for explanation. Again, money.

And given that all this is for a Sunday show, the payoff is minimal.

As referenced in my earlier post, the Hall of Administration, the County equivalent of City Hall.
KMR, as someone who is so quick to point out technicalities (and then keep hammering the point home in subsequent posts) you have a unique ability to miss the forest for the trees. The term "City Hall" is often used as a colloquialism to reference local governments in general, which is the manner in which I originally used it. This is an informal board where that and other means of informal communications are often used by many posters to make an overall point. You should focus your attention to their main points.

Is it? This board has been consumed with KROQ for a month now, but now we are talking about KFI. An anecdotal microcosm to be sure, but I am certain there are other such instances around town in various other communities. Someone earlier referenced that this was a gesture to appease the "angry old man crowd". Yes it is. That is their core audience, and KFI is serving it.

This story is generating press, which generates station sampling, which will lead to increased audience; almost certainly not enough to move the PPM dial, BUT, if the station continues to do stunts like this (and that is what it is, really) , then these become cumulative and eventually the effect is measurable.

In short, small payoff yes, but for almost no investment. I will take that anytime and KFI will too. Something small to build on. Besides, what kind of press have John and Ken been getting lately?
