VPN Use

Cloudfare denies my access to this site if i have the VPN turned on when going to radiodiscussions.com but once im logged into the site, if I turned it on, I can mvoe about fine.. no problems.

Seems overly weird/cautious and backwards.

I like using a VPN for multiple reasons, including one site I use frequently (fccdata.org) has some serious routing issues with my ISP that will never get fixed, so I have to turn it on to use that site..bt turn it off to access this one.

CloudFlare is protecting this website from attackers who use VPN technology in an attempt to hide their identity.
To clarify the matter, not all VPN IP addresses are blocked.
Some VPN IP addresses originate from countries which are blocked from this website due to a history of bad activity.

Seems "fccdata.org" has issues with many ISPs including a major one I use. Many sites due to use CloudFlare to keep the bad actors from bring them down. One of my nieces that works for CF said in this day and age those type of services are much needed.

I dont have any issues using a VPN except with this site and mwlist.org

Michelle Bradley at fccdata.org told me last year no one else has reported any issues and they havent changed anything, @Negin

That is odd. Sometimes when I click onto the state forums here on RadioDiscussions, it will say something along the lines of "this website is protecting itself from attacks". Only happens on my PC for some odd reason, so maybe I have some form of ad blocker on or something?

I had the same message when trying to access this site with a VPN. In the end, I got rid of the VPN because it was worse than useless - so many websites block you from accessing them via the VPN that you keep having to switch it off, at which point why bother?

It also didn't work well for its original purpose (listening to geoblocked radio) because the broadcasters are wise to VPN usage and block you, so I nixed it.

A lot of people use VPN to avoid being tracked at work or hacked in public places, it's not always because they are bad actors. This is one of the only sites that gives me problems while I'm on VPN and I always use US based VPN servers.

I have never had a problem using a VPN with this site although I have with a few others (CVS.com, one of the absolutely worst designed online sites in creation comes immediately to mind).

Perhaps the issue might be what specific VPN is being used. I quit using NordVPN due to these types of issues.

I was using the VPN service that comes with Firefox (for a fee):

It was useless - I couldn't access this site, I couldn't access the geoblocked radio content I bought it for, and I kept getting blocked from various other legitimate web sites. Thank goodness they offered a 30-day refund.

The problem with VPNs is that when you use them, you are using someone else's IP address. Once major providers and services such as Cloudflare get wind of what IP addresses are associated with VPN services (NordVPN, etc.), they will block them. This is done for reasons such as preventing directed denial of service (DDoS) attacks and for content providers (i.e. Netflix, etc.), is to protect geoblocked content.

Over my years working for corporations, I had used company established VPNs in order to access our company's intranet from remote locations. With that, we had to use additional authentication methods such as SecureID tokens.

I really don't like the way that VPN services market themselves as a method of being "secure" on the internet. I don't find much security in having my traffic going through another server where who knows what they are picking up and saving.

These days, I rarely use VPNs and when I do, I use ones that are set up more in a hobby environment and I use them solely to listen to Japanese broadcast stations and used to use it to test my own geographic specific content (the J1 Radio website used to be set up where users coming in on Japan-based IP addresses would be redirected to Japanese language content first, I am not doing that anymore).

Last year, my VoIP provider was hit with a DDoS attack and took out phones out for nearly two weeks. They eventually went to cloudflare and other services to try to prevent it.

I don't get too many complaints about people not being able to access REC sites. Many times, the issue is related to expired security certificates that I have to manually update.

Keep in mind too that there are also "blacklists" that some websites use of what the lists feel are "troublesome" IP addresses. I experienced this when Comcast wanted me to change my modem for a newer one. The problem is that with Comcast cable modems, the public IP address is tied to MAC address of the modem. When I tried using the new modem, I was blocked from using many websites, including banks and airlines. When I did some checking, I found that the IP address was flagged on several blacklists. I switched back to the old modem and have been using it ever since without problems.

You also want to make sure that your anti-virus software is up to date and know what you are installing. That will keep your computer from running botnets and other things that will get your IP address blocked.
