KROQ

The article I mentioned in my previous post stated that in addition to Seattle, programs hosted by KROQ personalities have been replaced at Audacy's Alt stations in Las Vegas, Miami, and Portland by people based at other stations. That leads me to wonder whether that's an indication of change coming to KROQ.

Read this article about John Allers and Christy Taylor from last year, and see if that changes anything:

My take is it's more about John & Christy consolidating their territory than anything having to do with KROQ.

What we know is the ratings for just about every Audacy alternative station has gone down since they announced the national programming strategy 18 months ago. It was a flop. A failure. It didn't help with ratings and it didn't help music strategy. A non-commercial station has replaced KNDD in the ratings. They need to fix that. John Allers is in charge of Seattle. He knows what to do.

I wonder if the pandemic programming/syndication of 20/21 was designed to get the Audacy stations of those formats through, knowing that the revenue wasn't there. The formats like CHR/Hot Ac/Urban/Country formats are event driven formats. So without events there is little interest, and music radio in general becomes background noise.

I'd agree with that. Now that the revenue appears to be returning, they can get back to normal at these stations.

Big get for KYSR. Lisa Worden and Stryker worked together at KROQ. Virtually a nail in the coffin for KROQ?

KROQ has been dead in music dayparts for nearly half a decade. They were running on the fumes from the morning show... and as soon as that collapsed, the whole tent came down on them.

The rest can be cataloged under "Rearranging Deck Chairs on the Radio Titanic".

But, OTOH, the new PM team on Alt will be a great benefit and creates the differentiation between streamed songs and a true radio experience.

Now we know why Stryker left Kroq. It seems it had nothing to do with him starting his podcast. So now we have the battle of Stryker and booker vs sluggo and Kevin. Time will tell...

Wow! Iheart scores again in the battle with KROQ. Smart move, as it brings Stryker fans over to Alt 98 7. Interesting to see if or how much of a ratings bump Alt will get out of this

If the issue is that KROQ's numbers suck and have for years, then I don't know how bringing a guy who people weren't listening to at the competition to your station helps (no offense to Stryker, it wasn't his fault, but...).

Which is why I've been asking on this thread, what might Audacy do with 106.7? Notice I don't say KROQ. Tweaks won't work anymore. An entire format change seems necessary. What should it be?

All-Sports would be nice! Audacy should put the Rams on there in time for the Super Bowl in less than two weeks. It is weird having LA Rams games on Jack-FM. I was listening to the NFC Championship Game on Jack-FM on 93.1 FM this past Sunday and right in the middle of the post-game show, Audacy just cut the feed from ESPN 710 and the Rams radio network to go back to music. No transition or anything. Audacy should really try to move their sports properties to one station and do a better job with presenting the Rams games on FM, especially considering the team is in the Super Bowl and ESPN 710’s night-time signal is very lackluster in the market, especially down in Orange County.

My understanding is that NFL deals are with a specific station, not a company. So they can't change the station in the middle of a season.

The problem with all-sports is what to do with all of the time when they don't have Rams games. Audacy's all sports stations in Boston and San Francisco are getting killed. So changing formats won't necessarily solve 106.7's problem.

Question for @DavidEduardo

Generally speaking, what is the average listening time for a sports radio in non-game times?

I had heard in August 2020 that Audacy was close to a deal to take over operations of ESPN 710 and move its programming to 97.1. Obviously that did not happen nor will it with Good Karma in the process of now acquiring KSPN.

It is nearly next to impossible to just launch a Sports brand on a dime. Where are you going to build a lineup of local hosts from? Plugging in Audacy's CBS Sports Radio or BetQL would lead to the instant death of the station as first impressions matter a lot and not having any local draws would not bring listeners over from 570 or 710 nor allow it to find new listeners. If/when someone does FM Sports in Los Angeles (which I do believe is inevitable), it will be with a mostly local daytime lineup and a few big play-by-play deals in tow.
