I have no insider info.
If you recall, it was Family Radio when headed by their previous leader who predicted the end of the world and it didn't happen, obviously. Naturally such a claim found to be false is good reason to lose tons of donations from what had been their following. Selling may not have been a choice.
Second, an FM frequency is multiple times the value of an AM signal. Think at least 5x the value, maybe upwards to 10x.
Operating an AM would likely be a bit more expensive but considering all of this and the exclusive content, buying an AM makes sense.

At the time Family Radio was in some financial trouble, so selling valuable FMs and moving to cheaper AMs made good sense for them. They sold the FM for $22 million and bought the AM for $8.5 million. The difference went to fund their ministry.
A few years ago they sold an AM tower property in NY for over $50 million. So their financial situation is better. At some point, they'll likely want to sell the 950 property too.
If I recall correctly, Family sold a big FM and bought the former KFRC in San Francisco before the 2011 End of the World thing.
I can't see how Family Radio's audience and donor base doesn't just age out, not t9 be replaced

In Connecticut Family Radio has a 1KW Daytime only AM station. WCTF 1170-AM licensed to Vernon a city East of the capital city of Hartford. The 1KW signal gets out pretty far. Supposedly it's for sale. It's listed on http://www.radiotvdeals.com/
I know you can stream a station these days, but I don't see anyone buying a 1KW Daytime Only AM station that does not have an FM translator in 2022. The other station listed on that site for Connecticut is also a 1KW AM without an FM translator - that one in Greenwich on 1490AM.

Family Radio, since the former owner passed away, has made major changes to what they do, including their music. It is mellow but using more praise and worship type music vs hymns, so sort of an "easy listening" Christian format that isn't CCM. Christian Elevator Music CEM. They still do have preachers also. The other thing they've done is they also are online so their listeners can also listen in Stereo in FM quality online which might cut into AM950's audience. So, they probably do still have some appeal to the conservative Christian homemakers, who would listen to this sort of programming and not have any politics involved. Family Radio Network (East)
