Chicago AM

Any ideas which signal this might be for $795k?

This entire ad just reads horribly, like a scam or something. But, if this is a legitimate ad, it could be 1530 WCKG, who just lost their tower site to the county, and is on STA for the next eight months. Or, perhaps it would be 1570 WBGX, also on STA. Both of these stations have translators, and are technically with geographic proximity to Chicago.

It does not read horribly and its not a scam. This is written exactly how a broker would write an ad. Is it a stretch? probably so

But.. anyone os anyone in this business knows all of this already and isnt surprised.

ACe HArdware's corporate headquarters are just a few miles SW of where the WCKG CP is supposed to be located. WBGX would be too far south.

WCGO is only 10 miles away from Ace HQ

WPNA is only 5 miles away from ACE HQ

It's one of these 3 as scrolling through the AM list in chciago, seem liek these 3 are most likely.

Id liek to think its not WCKG because the broker left out.. you dont have a full power tower site anymore and thats a major red flag/stumbling block. But.. brokers can be shiesters sometimes.

i'm betting its WCGO or WCKG and im leaning towards WCGO, which does have a translator CP

Another reason i susppect its WCGO, they said "Translator .. we can have one that can go along with this", indicating its not permanently tied to the AM or not in use already. WCKG's is. WCGOs isnt.

I would bet on the ad being for WCKG. They have had big gaps in their broadcast day for a number of months and just play music a lot of the time. They had the Dan Patrick show earlier (the only station in the Chicago area) and now have Dave Ramsey and some local sports programs. WCGO at least has 24 hours of programming.

Heres the thing... the ad doesnt mention lack of a full pwoer transmitter site.. thats gonna turn off about any possible buyer.. A.) lack of a site b.) lack of candor in the ad

Assuming then that the plan should be to feed the translator with the AM...I suppose they could take the AM digital. Otherwise, not a good idea.

I'm sure it's legit, but I'm also sure it's written horribly. Geographic limits of what? The city limits? The metro area? The market? And Exelon is misspelled.

At $795,000, WCKG would be horribly overpriced. WCGO, not so much. At least it has a tower site.

I see WCKG has a CP to upgrade power to 4kw. When they are on the air, it looks like they are only 190 watts on a long wire right now. Could be the 102.3 translator that makes it worth almost $800k. Unless, they are firm on the selling price, am sure they will end up selling for far less. If it is WCKG that's for sale

It's hard to figure out, but it looks like they have a CP for a super translator for WCKG on the Sears Willis Tower. But they just applied for a MOD for the translator out by Elmhurst. What a lot of AM stations like that are doing is going nondirectional with Class D minimum eiffficency, now 107.5 mV/m inverse field. This could go on a very short tower. That's all they need for the AM, but they have to actually broadcast on the AM to have the translator.

and that willis tower location would be expensive to lease/use, which is what this ad mentions.. this is a cheaper option. "lease an HD2 downtown"..

An AM could have any power upgrade, but still, AM, in most markets, is dead media, so nobody's gonna listen, no matter how powerful it.is, and the land that the stations sit on is probably more valuable than the stations themselves.

The "word on the street" is that WCGO was bought several years ago by a guy who never paid a penny to the sellers. So the sellers have it back again and are trying to find a buyer. The night signal is a waste of watts.... BTW: It's on leased land owned by the Water Reclamation District.
