Mark Wright leaving KING 5

Mark Wright posted on his fb page that today Friday is his last day at KING. Says he has some things lined up but wasn’t ready to share.

Lots of changes over at the big 5. Amy Moreno is also leaving after 10+ years. Glen Farley is retiring after over 30 years.
I also noticed that the new weather guy--Mike Everett, is now the "chief" meteorologist at KING 5. I think he is the first to hold that title since Jeff Renner. I wonder if that is why Rebecca Stevenson left. Jordan Steele and Craig Herrera were never "Chiefs"

Could be that none of them were certified meteorologists, just presenters. Generally, the Chief is also supervisor for the group. Just because you've been there for a while, doesn't make you a leader of others.

TEGNA's KPNX hasn't had a "Chief" meteorologist for years now. There is a morning, evening, and weekend evening meteorologist, but no "Chief".

Comments:

It was reported that when TEGNA did the big buyouts nationwide a few years ago, they pooled the talent at each station into "roles" and only allowed a certain number of each role to go with that buyout.

So at KING it was - Bounds or Matsukawa? Renner or Marriott? Byron or Farley? I'm sure Glenn Farley's departure now is actually he's choice. He's been there since something like 1986, a long and outstanding career.

Shocked at Mark Wright's exit. He's been a great talent in the market since he started at KCPQ and he works well with Joyce Taylor, something that isn't always easy to do (see: Allan Schauffler). Will be interesting to see where he goes and if he stays in market at another station or leaves TV news all together. Greg Copeland just *doesn't have it* to be the lead evening anchor at KING.

Amy Moreno is a veteran reporter who does good work. Hate to see her go as well.

In the weather department, as I noted in my recap around Christmas, I found Mike Everett to be quite impressive. Solid, professional meterologist - not glitzy but has a good personality and seems very competent with his delivery and does it smoothly. This is a good choice. I'm sure they let Rebecca know she was out of the running for Chief and she bolted for the open slot at KOMO.

Weather has been a disaster at KING since Renner's departure. A non stop revolving door of mostly mediocre talent at a station that once took weather far more seriously than the other stations in the market. If they can rebuild around Everett in evenings and Marriott in the mornings - with Claibon and Chris Nunley in supporting roles - this could flip from an area of concern to an area of strength quickly. My Christmas recap noted a promo running for KING5 weather that was reminiscent of the old days - it truly felt like a throwback for a station trying to lean into their heritage to regain their footing today.

Per Jessica Janner Castro Mark is leaving the business.

along with a lot of other great journalists...but not terribly surprising. But KING has big shoes to fill. Does Steve Bunin fit into the picture at all? Would he make a good evening anchor? Or is he just biding his time until the end of his contract doing the noon news and Verify segments?

Bunin is also doing the "B" team morning show, right? On KONG?

I've never found him terribly compelling and losing his slot to Jake Whittenberg on the "A" team doesn't bode well.

I will speculate and say Steve Soliz has a good chance of taking the evening news spot if they are looking at someone within the team.

I think he's good but does he have the "it factor" you need for that role?

Copeland - no
Bunin - no
Soliz - maybe?
Whittenberg - yes

Weather has been a disaster at KING since Renner's departure.
And yet, they still win.

And do better than #1?

Regain their footing? But they're still #1.

Bunin was demoted to the noon show after he and former KING anchor Michelle Li were assigned different roles and Mimi and Jake took over the morning slot on KONG.

Oh well in that case he's out when his contract is up unless he reinvents himself as a reporter a la Denise Whitaker at KOMO.

It is when you are reassigned multiple times since arriving and then being assigned a reporter role on the same newscast you were originally hired to anchor for.
Doesn't matter. Pay is the same.
Here's how local TV newsrooms work: You're hired in a primary role: Reporter, Anchor, Producer, Director, and are paid accordingly. Anchors are paid, some under AFTRA scale, for the market size. Same with Reporters. Non-union represented stations do the same, but the pay is negotiated on a case-by-case basis. Either way; as a reporter or anchor, you work a shift. That could be mornings, days, or late shift for several weeks or months. Anchors are selected for a long term shift after being tested on several shifts over time. If an anchor or pairing tests well, you may get that seat for the long-haul. Many cases, Reporters hired as reporters may get anchor fill-in duties. Those shifts could vary, depending on the need: Maternity leave, sick, vacation, or an open anchor position not yet filled.
Your assumption that someone is demoted for potentially being hired as a reporter, moved to a fill-in anchor role, then back to street reporter, is incorrect.
