KJZZ #1 Newstalker

January 6+ has KJZZ dominating the newstalk venue with a whopping 6.5 share, followed by KFYI at 5.7, and bringing up the rear again is KTAR with a 2.9.

YIKES!!

KNIX and KMLE are tied again at 3.4, and KSLX had a nice recovery from the onslaught of All Ho-Ho-Ho Music in the Holiday monthly. No other major surprises, other than what Nurse Jeff put on our Woolco charge card in December. Gotta get that card back from him!

Or maybe it's the NPR (91.5's version of beans & rice) and freedom from right-wing hate talk, since I don't think local programming accounts for that much of 91.5's broadcast day.

They do local inserts in ME and ATC. But The Show is their main local program in the daylight.

Weird, huh? Having a locally produced, locally-focused non-shouting news program actually works in the ratings?

I mean, I know these are just the 6+ numbers and not the daypart/demo breakdowns, but credit where credit is due. When Diane Rehm retired and public radio stations across the country needed to fill that slot, KJZZ went the extra mile of producing their own local news show.

FYI none of the news/talkers are Top 10 18-34 or 18-49.
In the Oct-Nov-Dec average in 25-54, KTAR was 18th, KJZZ was 20th and KFYI was 27th .

But KTAR (FM) was the market's #1 biller and sister KMVP was #3
This is very important information for all the KTAR haters out there. It doesn’t really matter what you see in the free 6+ numbers that are released every month, it’s the money demographic numbers and the billing rankings that matter most. KTAR is the #1 billing station in Phoenix. Enough said!

Say what you will...TMISU know how to monetize radio. They own the #1 billing station in the entire country: WTOP.
Does Ginny Morris of Hubbard know her station (WTOP) was sold? YIKES!

Surprised to learn KTAR is the #1 biller. The talk here is usually how low their ratings are, not performing as well as KFYI. No wonder Bonneville doesn't change much in their show line up, they're beating KFYI where it matters, making money. Where does KFYI rank in billing, I wonder?

Newstalkers generate a lot of revenue, but they're expensive to operate. While KTAR has a large payroll, KFYI runs the format on a shoestring and most likely a better operating margin. Perhaps the Old Gringo will enlighten we who are not worthy with dated billing figures for both stations. But the Nurse and I think both operators look more at the revenue generated by their market clusters, where I ❤️ has the advantage.

KJZZ is the only station in town to hear actual news, and people talking....not yelling....about what is going on.

Cheers to them, and hey KTAR....yeah, I'm pointing and laughing at what a sad station you have become.

KTAR-FM was, in pandemic-affected 2020, the #1 market biller. KFYI was 14th, with about a third of the FM talker's revenue level.

iHeart had 30% of all radio revenue, followed by Bonneville and Oddity at 14% and Hubbard at 13% and Univision at 10%.

I'm sure they are saddened at being the market's #1 biller.
