Last week, I was fortunate to visit Oahu for the first time in 11 years. I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard on much of the FM dial on Oahu. Some thoughts:
1. 102.7 and 104.3 seemed to move toward CHR/Pop and away from the more Rhythmic direction of years ago.
2. Both 102.7 and 104.3 seemed to have identical playlists. And playlists on both stations were too tight.
3. I liked KUMU's Rhythmic AC format. The playlist seemed wide and they played a good deal of songs that are not played anywhere else.
4. I was surprised how crowded the FM dial was on Oahu, especially in a market that the experts claim is not profitable. There are so many more translators than I can remember.
5. I am a fan of 105.9 The Wave's Soft AC format. They seemed to play a good variety.
6. 92.3 KSSK's playlist is too tight and repetitive.
7. I enjoy FM DX'ing. Has anyone ever picked up any Big Island stations from Oahu? I easily picked up some Kauai stations from the North Shore, and the Maui stations are regulars near Hanauma Bay and Sandy Beach. I was unable to DX anything from the Big Island, however.
Aloha, everyone!
