NBC, Fox To Simulcast First USFL Regular Season Game

Will anyone notice?

The NBA will be starting their playoffs then, and the NHL will be finishing up their regular season. Baseball will (hopefully) be into its regular season, and NFL Draft talk will be ramping up. Plenty of other real sports to follow at that time. Minor league football won't be on anyone's radar screen.

I'll be rooting for the Michigan Panthers they won the very first USFL championship in the '80s. I believe if the USFL stayed in the spring they would've stayed longer than just a few years. I'll watch just for a football fix Go Panthers Keep Pounding.

The USFL has the same scheduling problem that the new XFL does. The X played in January last year before Covid took it's toll, and that's in the heart of the NFL playoffs and NBA/NHL regular season. And yet, the XFL, and ultimately the USFL can steal away fans with the right angle. Remember when these other leagues were advertised as the off-season filler for the NFL? That is what will set them apart again

It didn't work for the USFL in the '80s, nor did it work for the XFL in 2000. There's no "angle" that'll work. There is zero interest in football in the spring.

If the USFL doesn't beat the WNBA, they should shut it down after that inaugural game. A ratings success for the WNBA has ~400,000 viewers. The AAF's debut game on CBS 3 years ago had over 2 million viewers.

But the USFL will not touch the NBA for ratings.

XFL 2.0 did not begin its season until after the Super Bowl in 2020, so there was no overlap with the NFL playoffs. Same for the AAF in 2019.

Quality play and compelling matchups will help a great deal. Here in Houston, the XFL 2.0 Roughnecks had a fun and exciting style through their five games that made for great TV. XFL 2.0 would have made it to season two as it was drawing better crowds than the AAF, which had to deal with mostly empty stadiums outside of San Antonio.

I recall watching quite a few games of the original USFL on TV. Quality was all over the place—some games were fantastic, while others resembled a bottom-of-the-barrel high school contest. Same observation for the UFL a decade ago.

Fox Sports is sued over the USFL Trademarks.

The United States Football League was slated to start in April, with FOX Sports fronting a new version of the league that ran from 1983 to 1985. That‘s in doubt, though, after the owners of the original USFL filed a lawsuit Monday against the network concerning the league with the same name, calling it an “unabashed counterfeit.”

The lawsuit said the outlet copied the original logo as well as all eight team names and branding without the permission from the original league’s creators. Additionally, it claims that FOX Sports “traded on the false narrative” that the new USFL was a reboot of the original.

The filed complaint includes claims for trademark infringement, false advertising and false association.

If a football falls in the forest....
And we still have additional leagues other than XFL 3.0 in the works, such as the American Patriot League, as well as another reboot of the United Football league.

Looks like the Freedom Football League has recently fizzled without ever playing a game.

Of course, the new XFL avoided that hurdle because Vince McMahon founded both the 2001 XFL and the 2020 XFL, so it's almost like stealing from himself 🤣

The worst Thursday night NFL game will have 10 times the ratings as all these minor leagues combined.

The American Patriot League? Do they play with red hats and AR15s?

They might as well. The entire premise of the league is that the players will be required to stand during the National Anthem. The APL appears to be a Trumpista/MAGA response to the “liberal” NFL.

I suspect the APL will never play a game, or it will operate in the extreme fringes of organized football, much like the various semi-pro leagues that only the most die-hard football fans have ever heard of.

Huh these leagues exist??

I'm surprised the NFL does not directly have ownership of Minor League Football seen on this list.
