KROQ, again

Being that the last thread got locked, I figured I'd start a new one.

It appears there will be quite a departure in KROQ branding/imaging as the station reportedly will be heading into a more active-flavored alt format. Instead of using the same boilerplate imaging VO/styles as other Audacy Alt stations, they've hired Austin Keyes as a VO voice for the station.

This is a complete 180 on the current VO, as, from what I can tell, his voice is more deep and gravely than the current VO voice, and as is he does VO work for a lot of classic/mainstream rock stations.

Is he the voice used by 99.5 KISS in San Antonio? Sounds like the same guy.

The plot is certainly thickening with regard to the future of KROQ.

(If their ratings don't improve, perhaps their moniker should be changed to K-ROT! 😜)

KROQ is remaining a rock station. Despite KLOS and KYSR outrating it

Cool; thanks for the reply.

I do like this gentleman's work on rock formatted stations. Although two of the stations where his work was previously featured (Rock 94.7 in Wausau, WI and CHKS in Sarnia, Ontario) recently flipped formats. Both of those stations flipped to Adult Hits months apart from each other, oddly enough.

New VP for Audacy LA, but KROQ is not included in his portfolio.

KROQ could start with a new logo. I don’t know what they’re trying to evoke with it, but it looks awful. They should go back to the old one and omit “World Famous”

How does KROQ seriously consider themselves world famous? Maybe 15 years ago, but if it’s so world famous hopefully no one outside of the US is hearing what it’s become.

Keep in mind there are no rules about branding. Branding is what the brander wants it to be. They came up with this brand in the height of their popularity. Nobody has come up with anything better yet. First they have to come up with a new product. Then they can come up with new branding.

As for KROQ, Mike Kaplan continues as PD (Brand Manager) and Miles Anzaldo continues as Music Director...for now. ;)

KROQ "Contact Us" page: Contact Us | 106.7 The World Famous KROQ

Kaplan has been the Brand Mgr. for KROQ since replacing Kevin Weatherly in September 2020 in addition to his current roles
as Audacy’s Alternative Format Captain and Brand Manager for ALT 92.3 (WNYL-FM) in New York.

I am reminded that, when KSCA was sold to Univision in February 1997, the branding was "La Nueva 101.9" until September 2011. That's nearly 15 years of calling it "new". Talk about "what the brander wants it to be" ...

I objected to changing the name from "La Nueva" and even showed positive research for the name, which listeners said meant "fresh music" or "new things on the shows" and the like.

The name was changed and the ratings dropped.

Here's hoping these moves will affect the station positively. I'm looking forward to them dropping the likes of Billie Eilish from their playlist. She's a billion percent talented, but she's a pop star. Let KYSR have her.

It's a shame nobody gives a damn about HD radio, KROQ's lineup is respectable- Active/Alt on HD1, KROQ of the 80's on HD2, and New Arrivals on HD3. That's quite the spectrum covered!

I would think Audacy would have figured something out by now to get the symbiotic mojo of KROQ and KCBS to be more prosperous. They're easily my top two stations in town.

KROQ will broadcast 106 minutes nonstop, commercial-free music after 1PM. I'm assuming these will be like KLOS' "95 minute free rides." A long set of music but a large set of commercials. I wonder what the effectiveness of this format is versus conventional blocks.

This audience has a greater aversion to commercials than audiences for most other formats. That's why they did the 2 minute promise. This is a different way to do the same thing,

Must be some sort of national thing. Their (Audacy's) classic hits station in Dallas, KLUV, is doing the same thing.

I think it is a smart promotion. Basically says, whatever you were listening to this morning, turn the station to us in the afternoon, because most listeners (especially office listeners) will be inclined to just leave the station on all afternoon once the commercial-free one o'clock hour has passed. It is especially good if your competition has a better-rated morning show and you know your morning show can't compete.

I had occasion to tune in for 20 minutes today. What I will say is this - After two directionless years, it at least sounds like they have chosen a path more inline with their glory years. I found it very listenable even though I am not really the target. Will it work? Only time will tell.
