The Block - most successful translators?

Looking at the last book from January, The Block (96.3/104.5/107.7) clocked in at a 2.8 share and it’s been pretty consistent. Considering there are some weak gaps between these signals, and it is just originating from WFBC-HD2, that’s pretty dang impressive. This may be the highest rated translator(a) running a stand alone format that I’ve seen.

Almost performing on par with 93.3, ahead of 94.5 and 103.3, 104.9 and almost triple of the two Summit translators.

I believe in giving credit when due. Nice job Audacy!
 
I've been hoping they would move to 93.3 for years. I believe there was a post about it a while back. They would get coverge in Asheville and other surrounding areas out of it.

93.3 feels extremely outdated, but with the way Audacy is piping The Rise Guys in to other markets now I doubt it’s going to go anywhere unless they moved TRG to 101.1 as their “home” station.
 
Not likely to happen. The Planet might not get great ratings, but it does pretty good with billing for Audacy, especially paring it with 101.1. The two pushed out the lower powered Real Rock and forced it to flip. (Not sure Audacy expected another sports competitor, but that's what they got.)

The Block was set up specifically to take down the numbers from Jamz, mainly the younger demos. It's probably accomplished that nicely. (FYI, I believe when it signed on, they stunted with Country. But they knew that a little translator couldn't affect iHeartRadio's hold on the market with two very successful full powered signals.)

Should The Block be on a better signal? Damn right. But Audacy doesn't have one in the market. The GM was smart in securing signals for each city. In fact, the reason a religious station is on 93.3 HD-2 is because they traded it for the 107.7 Anderson translator for The Block and the 101.5 translator for WYRD-FM. Not a bad deal.

Fun fact: WTPT, 93.3, is the only station in the Greenville Spartanburg Anderson market that's set up for PPM because it easily gets into the Charlotte Gastonia Rock Hill market with its signal.

I don't think The Rise Guys would appeal to the same demo as John Boy and Billy. Definitely a younger crowd. 101.1 tends to be a little more "redneck" in it's appeal.

I’ve noticed that WROQ is moving in to 90s and grunge a lot more slowly than most classic rock stations. They’re still very heavy on 70s rock, or I should say heavier than most classic rockers in 2021 and they’re not venturing past the late 80s at all except for some very safe early 90s stuff like R.E.M. or Aerosmith.

I can’t believe JB&B is still a thing, at least on a 100kw signal. So many things about that show seem out of touch with today’s audience.

BTW, not sure if anyone has noticed, but 102.5 has taken a heavy rock bent since 104.9 flipped. They’re still mixing pop in occasionally, but it’s moved much more in an 80s/90s rock direction than it initially was.
 
102.5 is still premium choice adult hits. The same playlist is on 96.7 in Columbia and 104.9 in Myrtle Beach. Last time I listened, it was mostly 80s classic hits with a few 90s and 2k songs sprinkled in.

Are you sure? Looking at the Recently Played, I see that WYNA, WLTY, and WLKO in Charlotte are all playing the same songs at the same time/order (normal for Premium Choice), which are more traditional Adult Hits, but WMYI's recently played is completely different and is more rock leaning.

I don't scan by 102.5 often, but I remember when they first came on the air they were pretty in-sync with 102.9 The Lake in Charlotte, but that hasn't been the case for a while. My assumption was maybe they are trying to beat WROQ back so they can try to ensure the two country stations stay ahead of Audacy.

As far as The Block, they haven't seemed to have had much affect on Hot 98.1 which I find odd. I know they have that 94.1 translator in Spartanburg, but the 98.1 signal can start to get weak near GSP airport. They've finally done it, but Audacy should have made WFBC a younger leaning CHR coupled with The Block and they could have damaged 98.1 much more IMO.

Getting back to The Block, they actually jumped a little more in the latest numbers released today. 3.1! 😳 They might actually be (by share) the highest ranked translator in the country.
 
Could they possibly benefit by adding a 4th translator in Asheville? I've been wondering this for a while. I know Asheville has no urban stations of any kind. 3.1 is high but could they go higher with Asheville added too?
 
Asheville is a different radio market, and Audacy/Entercomm doesn't have any stations that compete there. WSPA had a translator on 97.7 for many years, but it was sold to Clear Channel (97.7 The Brew WKSF-HD2).

Far from it...

Emmis' "93.5/107.5 The Fan" Indianapolis, two translators fed by WFNI-HD2 had a 4.6 share in the January PPMs.

At one point years ago, W238CH/WYDS-HD2 Decatur IL led the market with a 9.4 share in Eastlan's ratings.
 
Wow, The Block trimulcast is ahead of 104.9 (which is obviously not a smash), 94.5, and 103.3, all of which aren’t very good performers but still…also ahead of 99.5 and 98.5, but 98.5 hit a 1 share for the first time in ages.
The way WBAV does out if market tells me there’s a lot of people looking for something other than 107.3.

Over in Florence, 97.1 just got a 3.3 as a translator. They are owned by Community Broadcasters with the adult hits format as Frank FM.

The slip of Earth FM (103.3 and 95.9) is a bit surprising. They were doing well for a while, so much so there was a slight rumor floating around about moving the format to the better 94.5 signal. That's obviously not happening. The jocks are all local and seem to be plugged into the community - something you don't see anymore at all. Maybe the move to 95.5 in the future will help their signal issues.

JB&B is a mainstay on WIMZ in Knoxville and WQUT, Johnson City. Something about re-doing Johnny Carson bits and characters from Green Acres makes me say "what"?

When Earth FM started adding music from the 2000s that’s barely 10 years old, I think it turned a lot of the audience off, plus the music is kind of all over the place. I get having to evolve the music but at that price you have more competition with 98.9, 101.1, 99.5, 102.5, etc. I think they just traded in higher bragging numbers for better in demo numbers, they don’t seem to get a lot of advertisers like even 99.5 does.
