The Breeze Blows Out of Town

CTListener - I made a deduction based on playlist plus the other stations in the cluster.

If their goal is to grab predominantly male ears with *that* playlist, they are likely whiffing badly. I suspect that is not the goal.

I guarantee you WMMR, WMGK, WIP and probably several other stations are crushing 104.5 in male demos.

They are. Which is why rumors about Alt's demise always persist. But it's not necessarily because of the playlist, but a lot because of Philadelphians extremely stubbornness to change and how hard they hang onto tradition and things they know. (WMMR, 6ABC and the Action News Theme. B101 etc.)

WRFF used to be a very respectable ratings performer (and was for a number of years), but that was never able to be parlayed into decent billing.

Perhaps the advertisers have a stubbornness streak, too. 😉

I could see them clearing BIN on FM before The Gambler. There could be fruitful synergy with WDAS and Power (and Q, to an extent).

Human nature is to gravitate to familiar. WMMR is not by any stretch an anomaly in terms of having a good long run. Longer than some, sure. But plenty of stations in plenty of markets have enjoyed decades-long runs in more or less consistent formats.

Back to WMMR for a moment. They’ve adapted to the audience (and had some stumbles along the way). Same for B101, dating back to Easy 101, though their current stumble is a bit bigger. (Not trying to rehash the Jerry Lee/Audacy topic..fun as it is).

If the rest of Action News looked like it did circa 1980, that theme song wouldn’t mean a darned thing. (Worth noting, WNEP kept a variation of the theme even under new corporate ownership, at least the last time I ventured through that neck of the woods a couple of years ago).

A few more thoughts of my own. Someone else on here echoed the same thing I was thinking, which is that this is the most I've ever listened to Q102, and they actually...do a pretty good job. I don't care much for the music but I can see why Q has been around for so long. Good on air sound and decent local hosts. Good job guys!

BIN on 106.1 is pretty unlikely in my eyes, only because, if anyone has checked it out on 610, it's terrible. Everything, I mean everything, is pre-recorded. There isn't a live mic on that station. I think it would flop hard.

Anyway, if we wanna talk about the most unlikely formats, how about oldies lol. Guess I'll stick with MGK HD-2 for that.

I assure you they (WRFF) were no better than mid-pack from a cash flow standpoint, and perhaps below the FM median by a fair amount, when times were relatively good (i.e. when their ratings were at least double what they are now).

You can only cut costs so far to make up for a soft top line.

BIN grabs a 0.3 or 0.4 share in a market that is more than 30 percent African American in the one instance where it is found on a good analog FM signal (Hampton Roads). I'd say the chances of 106.1 going that route are extremely low.

One thing I should have mentioned earlier in this thread is that I will actually miss 106.1 The Breeze. Admittedly, I don't listen to terrestrial radio very much these days but I did have my car radio presets arranged by preference and The Breeze holds first place. As terrestrial goes, The Breeze was always my first choice and was certainly the one that I left on the longest. It was nice having some of those songs back on the radio but now they're gone again! Anyone else here actually gonna miss the station?

Oh! And I did really like how they sounded during Christmas. I wonder if they knew when they were doing Christmas that they were blowing up the station anyway.

I'm at the younger end of the demo (rare that I get to say that), and I enjoyed the station on a nostalgia kind of bend. It reminded me of what I was stuck listening to in the back of the minivan when I was growing up.

And you'd think that with the "Christmas Breeze" branding at Christmas, they thought they were sticking with the Breeze brand for a while.

It just dawned on me that the ever since the Breeze debuted, it has been what played when I donated blood. Oh well. Wonder what they’ll have when I go in a few weeks. 😂

And not once have I heard it in a store or (usually doctor’s) office. Ben seems to get the biggest share there. Go figure.

B101 + WOGL is a powerful one-two sales punch for Audacy.

WISX couldn't wedge itself into enough buys evidently.

Depending on the path WISX takes, this might be a great outcome for Audacy. I'm guessing WISX cross cumed with those two stations the most.

I've heard The Breeze in a couple stores. And it was really bizarre how many Uber and Lyft drivers had it on, almost immediately after it debuted.

I absolutely will! I am far from their demo (25 y/o guy) but I liked when they'd play some of those power ballads like Heart and Belinda Carlisle. But I'm not the average guy my age whatsoever lol. I think it was a well-programmed station and hearing Val Knight back on was nostalgic for when I was young and my mom always had WOGL on.

Also FWIW: just heard them ID on 106.1 as "WIOQ HD and Simulcasting on WISX"

Makes me wonder if Audacy could make a go of Soft AC on 96.5 and package sell ads with B101.1. I mean, there's probably no reason for them to do that except that running Soft AC would likely be cheaper than Top 40?
