850 vs The Fan vs The Gambler

Has 850 ever pursued an FM translator? Every other Cleveland AM has one.
That can help, but unless you put it on the Terminal Tower or the Key Bank building, for example, it is only going to cover a small zone of the multi-county Cleveland metro survey area.

On the radio locator site, WGVS is a 2000 watt station at 95.3 FM in Whitehall, Michigan, owned by Grand Valley State University. The call letters of WGVS were first used as of 03/01/1999.

WKGE is listed as AM850 in Johnstown, PA, but identified as "101.3 Wkge". The AM has unlimited operation hours at 10,000 watts but is directional with a whopping 9 towers. Wouldn't that be costly to maintain? With so many stations on AM840, 850 and 860 for WKNR to protect, it makes the case that AM radio really isn't dying, or is dying a very slow death.

Don't use Radio-Locator.

Here's WGVS(AM), which is still licensed but silent (but still must be protected until/unless it goes away):

And here's WKGE's current STA authorization... 2500 watts ND from one tower.

While WKGE is still licensed for the 9 towers (and must be protected thusly), it's been on STA for years and I wouldn't bet on it ever returning to full 9 tower operation.

Also, don't use Radio-Locator.

I second this fully. @Michi has done a GREAT job with FCCData, it's not perfect, but it's a MUCH better aggregator of data from the FCC. Radio-Locator is 1999-era technology that either should have upgraded or been retired a decade ago.

Good Karma only has translators in Milwaukee with WTMJ and WGKB, and both came from prior owners. They haven't filed for any others.

In theory, they could have gotten a xltr for WWGK and placed it at the Galleria (WHK's xltr is there with a whopping 5 watts ERP), but it apparently wasn't even worth the trouble.

Getting back to the original topic of the thread here is my thoughts:
I am from Dayton but I am a Browns fan so whenever breaking news happens with the Browns, or after the Browns games on Sunday, I tune into 92.3 The Fan. Audacy does program their sports stations well so I like what 92.3 The Fan does throughout the day. I don't really like 850 because they have Tony Grossi as an analyst for the Browns. I never liked him when he was at The Plain Dealer and I am also blocked by him on Twitter. As for The Gambler I have never listened to it so I don't have any opinion on that station.

1350 is your basic Fox Sports Radio station that you can plug and play in any town and it'll blend in to the wallpaper.

Well, it looks like those sports stations now have plenty to talk about for the next several months.

Their best program director is Jimmy Haslam.

Though in reality, it'll keep 850 and 92.3 busy for awhile, as 1350 is 99% national talk (mostly Fox, with a little VSIN), with the only local show being Jimmy Malone's non-sports show Friday mornings

I'm stunned WKNR didn't try to purchase WNWV. It doesn't cover the 6-county Cleveland Metro, but that's OK: covering the entire metro is a "get ratings" thing. In 2022, most radio stations ad revenues come from local direct businesses, not huge national or regional accounts from advertising agencies who's buys were determined heavily by ratings. Perhaps top 5 to 10 markets are different, but not any more in most markets. Ratings are nice, but won't guarantee strong ad revenues. In 2022 a strong, local-direct sales team is critical (and is in short supply today, for some reason). The easy "get ratings, big agency orders come flying to your e-mail box" days are OVER.

That’s the point, isn’t it? 1350 is a generic station with little local distinction and a signal that really doesn’t reach Cleveland. It’s an Akron station that’s wearing Groucho Marx glasses.
I have not listened to Jimmy.Malone's show. What does he talk about?
It’s a general talk show that is totally out of place on 1350. At least WMJI still carries it on Saturday mornings, but for how long?

I wonder why Malone didn't remain with WMJI in some capacity after the morning show was revamped. Maybe he could have VTed the midday or afternoon drive shift.

Because he no longer fits in with the demographic they are trying to reach. They probably had to keep him around in some capicity because he has a contract or something else going on?

850 WKNR today sounds like they are on their night pattern & power. I live less than 20 air miles south of their transmitter site and noticeably weaker signal....noisy....in my car radio where they are usually solid daytime.

Could GK make a deal with EMF for a translator?

What about iHeart? Could they use one of their translators for WARF? WHLO has yet to fire off theirs.
I’ve had the impression that GKB is more interested on pushing digital and streaming for WKNR above getting an FM presence. It’s evident with how much “ESPN Cleveland” is pushed as a brand.
