KROQ, again

Presumably the MD is running things until he is promoted or the new PD comes in.
BDS lists Miles Anzaldo as PD. As he has been MD for four years this month, it's a logical presumption that he is at least acting PD.

But, as our anonymous "insider" poster says, something completely unthought-of by us outsiders (radio fans as well as pros not employed by Audacy or privy to its inner workings) could indeed be taking place there!

Indeed. One thing that is public knowledge, because it was reported essentially concurrent with the announcement that Kaplan was out at KROQ, is that Audacy is conducting a nationwide search for a new PD. In the meantime, Miles is perfectly capable of keeping things together ... and, given the way the industry works, will at the least be one of those considered for the job permanently.

Personally, I still think they should find whatever Rolodex Freddy Snakeskin's number is in and call him. But I have nothing to do with the process, so it's nothing more than my opinion (and respect for his work).

I suspect Dave Richards will have both hands in the KROQ cookie dough as the company works to resuscitate the struggling station. Mr. Richards has been a terrific PD for KISW in Seattle, and prior to that, he was PD for WKQX in Chicago (when Dave Richards was succeeded by Tim Richards there, Q101's ratings tanked, and when Tim Richards was replaced by some dingbat from WGN, the ratings tanked even further). When Dave Richards programmed Q101, the brand achieved record high ratings.

He's the kind of person they should be looking for, in terms of a content creator who is more than strictly a music person. He's managed to keep KISW in the forefront, and developed SHOWS. KROQ needs a show creator. But the one problem is the lure of Seattle. People who live there don't like to leave. I have a friend who chose unemployment in Seattle over an easy job somewhere else.

This is now the 2nd time you have offered up Snakeskin unsolicited. Are you his agent?

Or, like me, we just think that he has a good sense of both the music and the audience.

I get really pis---ed when people say that "he's too old" in this and any radio situation. A good programmer understands research, studies the target group(s) and uses experience to create a music and talent and promotional blend that has a good chance at success.

Freddy, if not PD, would be an excellent MD.

As someone on the inside, I do know a lot more than I can (or will) say. I come here (largely) to entertain myself with the "certainty" spouted by many of the armchair quarterbacks here. Thanks for the smiles. :)
I sometimes liken this place to sports radio, everyone has an opinion of whatever team they are talking about. However very few people if any, are accurate. And you are right as an employee to sit back and laugh at the rumours.

Freddy Snakeskin's time with KROQ goes beyond the 80's. He did a great job running the KROQ HD subchannel for 80's/ Classic Alternative for awhile. I'm not sure why he left after that

Hard to imagine he was making money befitting a "legend" for programming a channel heard by dozens.

Freddy had his position eliminated in April 2020 as PD/Morning Host of KROQ-HD2 as part of Entercom nationwide cuts.
He also had his job as JackFM PD + KROQ-HD2 PD/on-air host cut by CBS Radio in July 2015, also as part of big layoffs.
Third time's a charm, right?! ;)

So your saying he's already in their Rolodex, but despite wide support from this board, they're just not using it?

I've got noting against him, perhaps he is a good fit for the job, but his name keeps popping up...and he is from 1980s KROQ, so fairly or not, I am sure that doesn't exactly work in his favor.
I don't see the point, unless it is just a dislike for older, more experienced people.

I had not done a rock station since the very late 60's when I was asked by Emmis to help find a format and then set up and consult the programming for it's newest acquisition in a market much larger than LA.

We found that the second biggest "open" format was rock... classic up to current. And that is what we did, after careful research. We got over a 20 share in the first book, a month after going on the air.

I don't think anyone thought I was too old to figure out what people wanted by asking them. And with 40 years of radio experience, training a new staff, setting up MusicMaster, deciding on promotions and advertising were based on experience, not knowing who the bass player on every cut we played was.

I don't think that the bigshots in Bryn Mawr are paying much attention to radio message boards.

... perhaps, given their current state of affairs, they should!

I wonder how much involvement, if any, there has been from the very top in this whole alternative strategy from David Field. It’s been no secret even back in the Entercom days (pre CBS) that he loved alternative, and after taking over the CBS stations it was well known that alternative was by far his favorite format and he seemed to get the ball rolling with the whole “Alt” thing and flips to alternative and was very invested. There’s supposedly a rumor that it was put on WTDY-HD2 in Philadelphia so he could listen to it on an Entercom/Audacy station.
You know what David Field loves more than the alternative format? More revenue and profit for his stations.

I notice no one has mentioned Jeff Federman but he has often been criticized even more than Kaplan for KROQ's recent decline. And he's still there obviously. What is his strategy now?

One wonders why Lazlo from the Buzz in KC was never consulted. Field’s aware of him, and they actually created a more exciting culture around that station during its peak when KROQ wasn’t much to be excited about.
