Air America was built around Al Franken and he's certainly entertaining, at least now! A couple of years ago, I heard him say, "I like Ted Cruz more than most people - and I hate Ted Cruz!".
And Franken's shift was poorly rated. The one show that overperformed was Randi Rhodes and it was vastly more entertaining that the other intensely agenda-driven hosts.

Still find it ironic that the ultra right wing likes to call themselves 'patriots'.
As opposed to the ultra far left, which have been known to stomp on the American flag and make many remarks that would be highly disrespectful to veterans? Just going by some of the behavior that takes place on free-thinking college campuses these days.

For as unsavory as it seems to some, that's protected free speech. Attacking the U.S. Capitol, or trying to keep people of color from voting? Not patriotic. And didn't our former President call Veterans killed in service to our country; suckers? Yeah, some patriots.

But getting back to the topic at hand; just what the Seattle market needs; more Crazytown radio calling themselves patriots.

Fordranger- Please cite one example of students on a college campus in 2022 showing disrespect to veterans. Being anti-war is NOT anti-veteran. Heck, even being anti-military is not anti-veteran. What little campus protest I have seen has a lot more to do with being anti-capitalist than anything. Maybe a little anti-vax or anti-mask thrown in for good measure. Standard campus stuff.

Notalent- Do you like, actually, LIVE in Seattle? By what metric are you judging the "failure" of Seattle? Because if the city was failing you would see folks moving out in droves and housing prices plummeting. But of course the opposite is true. Yes, the city has problems, but so does every big city. And if you know your history you know it has always been so. Yup, lots of homelessness...that is true. Vast majority caused by opiate addiction, and the majority of that by a few notable players in the pharma world. Seattle is left to deal with the problems shoved their way by others.

1090 has just been assigned new calls. KPTR. I am guessing this would be for "Patriot"? Kelly pretty much nailed it, I am afraid. "...more Crazytown radio calling themselves patriots."

Before Frank shuts this thread down for political stuff, iHeart will be using 1090 for the sole purpose to clear other conservative talk shows in another market, including Clay & Buck. They do this with their music formats (Country - Bobby Bones, Alternative - Woody Show, you get the point). I think iHeart earns more $$$ for their program (ahem, EIB's) being carried even if it has 2,000 listeners in a market.

Albeit, I see plenty of Seattle license plates whenever I go south to Yakima (and it has nothing to do with students going to CWU). How can anyone who is middle-class or working-class, afford to live anywhere around a 50-mile radius of Seattle nowadays? Older 2 bedroom homes are going for $600K at the cheapest, a million at most. Don't get me started about 3+ bedroom homes or those in newer developments. Meanwhile, they are $350K (or less) in west Yakima! The same thing applies to the Tri-Cities, and it's even less in Ephrata/Moses Lake. Taxes in King County are crazy too. Once I start teaching, the whole westside (well, maybe Centralia...) is off the list of possible places to move to (at least back to). Apartments are $1,700-2,000 a month nowadays and parking isn't free at many complexes. Way cheaper here on the dry side of the Cascades, to grow a savings fund for my family.

Combine that with drug/opioid addiction, and you wonder why there are so many tent colonies in Seattle proper. Needles on the streets, tweakers shooting up in public view... It pushes tourists away from what used to be a beautiful city (SF is the same). Good leadership can end this - putting these people into indoor housing, affordable housing, helping them look for jobs, etc. The naysayers will say what they want, but how else can Seattle go back to its glory days?

I love when the Left gets so upset over a radio format or a political party not in lockstep with their beliefs. Progressive talk failed long ago, welcome to reality, Dems.

Much of that cost of living is being driven by tech workers who moved North from the Bay Area and Silicone Valley. They telecommute, and can jump on the Horizon Shuttle for an in-person meeting as needed. They brought money along the way, and in spite of expensive housing, it's still less than half of what they would pay in a place like Napa Valley.

Yakima is a mainly agricultural, with a side of drug sales from gangs. And like it's California cousin; Fresno, cost of single family housing in Kittitas County has actually gone down due to increasing crime and lack of new businesses interested in the area.

I actually agree with this statement. Seattle has replaced tourism, Boeing and Microsoft, with Amazon and high tech workers. Those workers pay the high taxes, so the city council can care less about tourism.
Good leadership can end this - putting these people into indoor housing, affordable housing, helping them look for jobs, etc. The naysayers will say what they want, but how else can Seattle go back to its glory days?
For whatever you think of the statement, Seattle and Portland are becoming mini Bay Area's, like Yakima is becoming Fresno.

So on the radio side of things, if 1090 fulfills their new calls and goes "the Patriot", what clears on 950? Everything that WAS on 1090? Or do you all think that something else is in store?

Yeah, I actually do live in Seattle, Queen Anne. I was one of the lucky to have a guy try sneaking up behind me to smash my head with a rock and maybe steal my 5 year old iPhone... Lucky I saw him coming out the corner of my eye and narrowly escaped with my life as he was going for the broken bottle in his coat pocket. My dentist is in Century Square, 4th and Pike. Parking at 3rd and Pine. I know how it is. My Doctor is at 12th and Madison, I go there very frequently and I know how Seattle is. I sometimes take the bus when I work at Climate Pledge Arena... Over 75% of the time there are "incidents" on the way home at 10pm.

One more conservative talk station will change nothing here so just stop wringing your hands, the sky will not fall and Kshama Sawant will continue to try to kill the goose.

Just some nostalgia…

I was working at KING AM in ‘81 when they dropped the soft rock format to go all news/talk. I think I may have been one of or one of the last jocks that played the last music on the station.

We had moved into the new palatial studios at KING with a beautiful studio setup. (Since torn down for new condos). It was depressing to leave but but we understood the changes that were coming. Went to work in Palm Springs and came back north for a nice gig at KIXI FM for a few years, 95.7 then called KIXI LITE.

I will always honor Rob Conrad for giving me that big first shot. And Bruce Murdock for rehiring me. These guys were always fair and gave guys like me a second shot.
