The slices of pie keep gettin' thinner and thinner: Nielsen Audio Ratings

Has KEZ become stale?

KJZZ again leads the News/Talk format

Interesting that both KYOT and KOAI are referred to as Adult Hits. KOAI is really Adult Depends Hits.

While there's no Spanish language station in the Top 10, combined Spanish stations listening is a 11.4 share.

Another month, another survey,

I can't believe how KOOL-FM has fallen right into the crapper. Wait.......yes I can. Just listen to their music.

It wasn't long ago that they were doing well playing the music they're playing today, and other Audacy Classic Hits stations are still doing well. Whatever's going on at KOOL-FM must be a local programming issue (although they are up a bit this month).

Whatever KOOL did around September of last year has changed the 5.1 they had in 25-54 last July for a 1.4 in January and a 2.0 in February.

As Cecil Heftel once told me on the phone when telling me to get to Dallas in the next few hours: "They broke my radio station".

What in the actual... I have no words.

Or... they've been WOWed, it's a short drive from 94.5 to 95.1. The close proximity to each other has KOOL-FM listeners discovering a better, wider choice of oldies.

"Better" is subjective. People like what they like. What is not subjective is the choice is older. KOAI stated clearly from the start that their intent was to reach listeners over the age of 65. Every month, John Sebastian posts that the station is #1 in that demo. I haven't seen anything like that from KOOL. So they are forced to play under the current standards set by advertisers, while KOAI is operating under a different set of standards. That's great for them and their listeners. If they can afford to operate this way without charging their listeners, that's fine. I believe however, they're still geofencing their stream, while there is no restriction to the stream for KOOL.

Phoenix is unique in regards to having two competing stations for over 65 (KAZG/KOAI), in addition to an 80's centered Classic Hits. So older listeners actually have a choice. In a slightly smaller market, San Diego, the oldest music you'll find on the radio is Classic Hits KXSN, which is pretty much #1, especially the February PPM. With no other choices, most listeners over 55 looking for music will pretty much land there, even if they prefer music that is older. Which I think might be a factor in their high ratings. Maybe KOOL has lower ratings, because in Phoenix, they have a choice to go elsewhere

But then again, this is just my thought regarding why KOOL might be struggling.
And yes WOW is still geofencing, much to my chagrin. Now, if WOW could figure out a way to monetize it, and generate some revenue. They can't be satisfied with just covering the bills, especially owning 65+, in the top 10. While not a desirable age group, it is something they are not capitalizing on.

Not what happened. I'm looking at sales demos, and WOW really does not have much below age 65. KOAI (The WOW Factor) is at its lowest 25-54 level in five books, so the KOOL-FM listeners did not go there. They had a 0.5 in 25-54 in February and were ranked 29th in the market in that important demo.

In 25-54, there is something else going on with KOOL.

And, based on somewhat old billing data, WOW bills about 1/4 of what the other two "cluster mates" of that company do.

And, yet, the average age in Phoenix is a touch under that of San Diego. It's been many decades since Phoenix was "just" a retirement community and even more time since people with TB went there for therapy in the dry climate.

Almost as long ago has been the "birth" of the lamptimer....

I need to make a confession to the Media Hut, let them know that I signed the petition MULTIPLE times with fake names. . couldn't help it, I love đź’• the Lamptimer!
