The Party is over

Power 95.3 is now being fed onto 94.5HD2.
Format flip coming soon?

Very soon, especially if they start promoting the fact that they are moving off 95.3. And they'll have to change their name too. WPYO got a 3.1 overall and their stream got .1 in the last book. They'll be lucky they get a .3 on 94.5-HD2 alone. I'm sure the folks at i-heart (WXXL) are happy this is happening.

I also noticed that 95.3 is off the air on FM as of 3/27/2022 at 12:57 PM, but the online stream is still active.

Update 1:20 pm: Noticed 95.3 is back on the air on FM.

They just announced to tune in at 8 AM tomorrow for a big announcement.

Jorge Pabón "El Molusco" has announced that WMEG's afternoon show will be syndicated to 95.3 and 97.1, and he also implies that another SBS morning show could be coming. Middays haven't been announced but it's very likely to be Alex Sensation.

Interesting development. Orlando is of course, Puerto Rico's 79th municipality. Tampa Bay, not so much...

Given the type of programming Molusco does, the format is likely going to be Latin CHR, which makes me wonder why Cox didn't shelf Éxitos and move Power to 96.5. Their toes are going to be stepped on.

Official post to listeners about the change. I have to say it was pretty well put and straightforward and it’s nice to tell the listeners.

I may be wrong, but I wonder if Cox is keeping Power alive as a backup if Exitos starts to fail. SBS and Rumba/iHeart know what they’re doing and Cox’s attempt is fragile even if it’s done well recently. “Power is back, this time on 96.5” if you will.

WPYO did well considering how well WXXL historically does and their smaller signal. Now, 106.7 owns CHR again with 105.1 the next closest station to it. Will anyone (Audacy) try to jump in? 101.9 again? Cox throwing Power away just seems like a waste considering it did have an audience and was doing okay with what it was up against.

The Company that should take advantage of this change is JVC Broadcasting. For 6 years 103.1 The Wolf has done NOTHING in ratings. So much so... they don't subscribe anymore. Yet, they have Stevie Demann (former PD of Power and 102 Jamz) and now Little Shawn (from Power) in the building. Call it 103 Jamz. It would be huge!

If they rebrand to 103 JAMZ with a Hip-Hop (or urban) format, they would conflict with iHeart's WOWI in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area, who already has the 103 JAMZ branding.

That's not an issue for a station in Florida unless iHeart has a nationwide trademark for it (which is unlikely). Station brandings come into conflict all the time - look at 99.5 The Wolf - it's present in Portland (Audacy) and DFW (Cumulus).

I was wondering when someone was gonna bring up 103.1. Just depends on if they can sell the younger CHR demo or not.... Right now they've got Florida Man Radio in the building which probably pairs with the country format in sales. But you're right, might be an opportunity to do something different. Exitos isn't going anywhere despite what was suggested above. The market has changed over the last 30 years and probably can support at least 3 Spanish / or duel English / Spanish formatted FMs. They're all kind of different and appeal to different audiences.

Another example is 2 different Q102s in Philly and Greenville, Mississippi. Both use the same branding as eachother, but are owned by different companies. I was going to point this out in the original reply, but I didn't know how to word it.

As long as Johnny Magic and his crew continue to dominate in mornings on XL, no one else will ever have a chance to be successful with CHR in this market. Mix 105.1 is a shadow of its former self and someone could potentially make a Hot AC/AC work, but assuming Johnny still has some years left at XL, the CHR game will be won by 106.7

That would mean nothing to JVC. They launched 103.1 The Wolf in Orlando when there was already a 103.1 The Wolf in Tallahassee (owned by a different company).

Same with Alt 92.3 in New York City (Audacity) and Alt 92.3 in New Orleans (Cumulus) and Hot 106.7 in Harrisburg (Cumulus) and Hot 106.7 in Nashville (Midwest Communications)

They went to WDBO rather abruptly a little past midnight after about 10 seconds of silence, not 9:25am.

Noticed 95.3 went silent at midnight and temporarily began simulcasting former sister station WDBO at approximately 9:25 am ET.
I though it went to WDBO at 9:25 am, but you're right. It actually began simulcasting WDBO shortly before midnight. I had recorded an aircheck when it happened.

I think what Cox has done here is.... they're attempting to "clear the frequency" of any Power listeners and the demographic that it was targeting. They know that the new format is going to be some kind of Spanish hits... and could target and appeal to some listeners of Power. So... you do a big sign off... rebrand to a generic "Power Orlando" and divert listeners as best you can to the app and other stations even if it's XL, Mix, Rumba, or Exitos.... and then purposely stick something on there (WDBO) for however long left you have the frequency for, that none of the Power listeners will listen too. That way, SBS is pretty much starting from scratch and won't have any carryover from Power. Cox is probably hoping that no one is listening to 95.3 by the time SBS takes it over.
