METV FM 88.7 Chicago is finally streaming

You’re technically listening to Audacy’s WMYX HD2 Milwaukee. They switched WMYX-2 from the network feed to a direct simulcast of 87.7 a few months back so WRME could have a stream. Not a bad deal.

I discovered this by accident last week. I asked my Google Home to play MeTV FM, expecting to hear the national feed but was pleasantly surprised to hear the 87.7 mentions and local Chicago commercials. i am really surprised that no one else mentioned this. I searched this board and elsewhere and found no discussion of it.

Yes, but it's the Chicago playlist according their website, and I hear also mentioning the 87.7 on stream.
WMYX HD2 is simulcasting 87.7. If you listen at the top of the hour, they are IDing both stations. Since WMYX HD2 has always streamed, this means that 87.7's programming can now be heard online. This began late last year. Quietly. There was no mention of it or fanfare. WMYX HD2 previously ran the network version locally.

They've been leasing 99.1 HD2 since 2018, particularly to show off and stream the network feed. Now that the network feed as several actual affiliates, this is no longer needed and it can be used for other purposes (such as streaming 87.7's programming)

Yes there are a couple of affiliates in the country, but every version have their own playlist and don't use the Chicago playlist.

Another affiliate is 96.7 WXZO in Willsboro NY, serving the Burlington-Plattsburgh market. It also audio steams at 967me.com. But I don't think someone in this small station is putting together its own playlist.

I thought the reason you subscribe is to have a turn key operation, where maybe you just plug in your own spots and breaks, but run the network the rest of the time.

WMEX AM 1510 Quincy Boston runs METV FM off hours dubbed METV Music since they are AM. Feed also references METV FM.
They run local live jock’s from 7am to 6pm weekdays. 11am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. They run no local spots with the METV FM feed. Link is wmexboston.com

Larry Langford’s 910 WGTO also carries it. Might even be able to pick that one up in some areas during the day. I used to get it quite often

Also, WJMK 1250 and Translator on 99.3 in Bridgeport, MI, (Saginaw) from the old WKNX 1210 site on Gabel Rd. WGTO 910 also has a Translator on 97.1 in South Bend, IN. Probably can't hear that over in Illinois and Wisconsin because of The Drive.

They do need to refine their smart speaker results. After my initial post, I asked my Google Home to ”Play MeTV FM”. It started playing WXZO from TuneIn. So then I said “Play WRME” and it played 87.7 MeTV FM from Audacy. Great, but that was yesterday. So today I said the same thing. Play “WRME”. It says “sorry I don’t understand”. Ok, I say “Play MeTV FM on Audacy”. It thinks I’m saying Odyssey so it ignores that word and starts playing WDQN from TuneIn. Finally I say “Play WMYX-HD2”. Bingo! I finally got it. But the average listener will not got though all of this to listen to a station.

I wonder why they wanted to lease WMYX-HD2 just to have a stream. They could stream themselves for cheaper

... royalty rates for streaming only stations are much higher than those for broadcast stations

...amazing audio quality (as in audio processing settings, spectral balance, streaming bit rate, etc.), probably due to the great ears that Rick O'Dell (and Bill Cochran) possess, and this is the product that they have created. As for music programming on this radio station - top notch (for the format! Bill keeps it peppered with little specialty items that are not typically heard on other radio stations (ex. highlighting Dusty Springfield's birthday and playing some of her music throughout the day, every weekday at 3 PM playing two versions of the same song, by different artists, etc.). No wonder this station is so well liked.

Well said. I enjoy the station as too.

I'm glad to see that still have their Franken-FM 87.7 frequency. They are one of the lucky ones able to hang on to it If they lose it, very few options for them to go elsewhere on Chicago FM.
