Atlanta April PPM

Largely the same for a stagnant market. 101-Five dropped a bit, The Bull went up a bit, but 101-Five is still in the lead.

Of note is 105.3 The Beat almost overtaking the struggling Hot 107.9. The Breakfast Club is probably doing them favors.

Power, Star, and V are all tied. V103 is getting absolutely creamed by WAMJ/WUMJ and WALR. It’ll be interesting to see if they fall even lower and if a flip could be in the future. Q has taken a wide lead ahead of Power.

No showing for 96.7 - 107.1/102.3 is still the higher rated of the Spanish language stations.

One thing about La Raza (107.1/102.3) and Zed 105.7: Yes, La Raza has a bigger average audience number. If you look at the demos, Zed is way ahead in the younger demos, and La Raza is far ahead in the older demos. A notable point, however, is that Zed has a way, way bigger cume. In other words, far less different people listen to La Raza but listen for much longer periods of time.

Not sure about if the shortened preseason Braves gave The Fan a boost, but this is the second month 680 / 93.7 is listed higher than 92.9 The Game. IMHO: there is something going on with sampling or 92.9 has lost their mojo. I am sure the CBS national sports talk weekend shows which seem heavily aimed toward NYC are not helping. The Hawks were disappointing this year compared to last year. Are the Monday thru Friday shows not performing on 92.9?

Has 92.9 ever caught on heavily? They’ve done alright but it doesn’t seem to be on WJFK, KRLD, WXYT, WJZ, WKRK, WIP etc’s level.

Don't they bill well?

105.3 THE BEAT has a new night show and have started lots of local remotes around town.

what would V103 flip to?
I doubt they flip. If they do, Urban AC is doing really well in the ATL. The real problem going Urban AC would be getting a good morning show. If they do "spin the format wheel" their strong signal doesn't limit them to a inside the perimeter P1. Any flip would be a temporary hit to cash flow. Of course the on air talent could be cheaper if they VT soft AC or clone CBS FM. Most likely an accountant or someone who will not get a bonus will decide. After all it's all about the money.

Contemporary hip-hop is struggling as an FM format in many places for reasons cited on this forum and other R-D forums previously. In V103's case, there are three other stations playing similar music (94.5, 105.3 and 107.9).

I'd be curious to know how much music from the 90's & 00's is being played on V103. Looks like they are only playing one or two such tracks an hour most of the time. Perhaps they need to increase that.

Personally, I'd love to see V103 flop and flip to Variety Hits or Classic Hits. :) How many hip-hop and R&B choices does one market need on the FM dial?

There is no hole in this market for Urban AC. Kiss and Majic are doing the format and doing it well.

It's where the bulk of the radio audience is. Audacy wants a part of that money even if they're not #1.

If there was more money to be made in classic hits, Cox would be doing it.

Cox won't do it regardless; such a format would cannibalize 97.1.

I agree it is too soon to throw in the towel on V103; just wishful thinking on my part.

My point was that Cox could take The River in more of a hits direction instead of where it is. Any other station that tries classic hits will have to compete against The River. Might as well start a news/talk station to compete against WSB.

I was just looking at the percentages

It's not a hole two stations are splitting 12+ (6+) verses 3 stations going after 8.3 (6+). It wouldn't be a huge flip as the V has been serving Atlanta's black community since the 1970's. But they had better have a killer AM show. Some times heritage stations fail.

Cumulus failed with News, then, New talk, finally Talk on 106.7. WSB has channel 2's news gathering going for it.

Cox’s Atlanta cluster is going to be a force to be reckoned with for anyone. Kiss, B98.5, The River, and WSB are all leaders in their categories. A competitor might be able to get some audience, but all of these stations are rock solid in their audience and are tough if not impossible to take over.
